Mazda and Panasonic have announced that they are in discussions for the supply of cylinder lithium ion batteries to be installed in future Mazda EVs set to be launched in the second half of the decade. This means we’ll see new Mazda EVs launched as early as 2025, up to 2030.
Under the supply partnership, Panasonic Energy will supply Mazda with cylindrical batteries manufactured in Japan and North America, but this is not the first time Panasonic and Mazda will be working together.
The batteries in Mazda’s sole EV model the Mazda MX-30 is already supplied by Panasonic. Previously, Mazda made an all-electric version of a previous generation Mazda 2 (called by its JDM name Demio), and the batteries in that car was supplied by Panasonic as well.
The Mazda MX-30 was launched in Malaysia in June 2022 and goes for RM199k, with a 35.5 kWh battery powering a 145 PS, 271 Nm electric motor, with a range of approximately 199km.
