With the Proton eMas 7 electric SUV previewed in August, a number of China-based units of its technical twin, the Geely Galaxy E5 has been sighted on Malaysian roads today, with images courtesy of Mohd Rayyan and KhaiLun Lim, as posted to the paultan.org Automotive/Car Discussion Facebook group.
As it emerges, these examples of the Geely Galaxy E5 are on a ‘long test drive’ across borders, from China to Malaysia, and these will be brought together with its developmental sibling, the Proton eMas 7, according to a post by the Proton eMas Cars Facebook page. The page will commence its livestream tonight at 7:30pm; stay tuned to paultan.org to find out more.
Proton emphasises that the eMas 7 is not a mere rebadge of the Galaxy E5, and is in fact a joint development between Proton and Geely, noting that 230 Proton engineers and designers have been involved in the vehicles’ development from the outset, with a total of 700,000 manhours and 10 million km of vehicle testing, in addition to 30,000 km of durability adaptive testing and up to 100,000 km reliability testing.
The full set of specifications for the Proton eMas 7 has yet to be disclosed, though going by those of the Galaxy E5, we know that the electric SUV has a single-motor powertrain driving the front wheels with a 218 PS/320 Nm unit, propelling the E5 from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, to a top speed of 180 km/h.
The Aegis lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that is for the Galaxy E5/eMas 7 uses Geely-developed short-blade cells, offered in 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh capacities. going by the more generous CLTC Chinese testing standard, these are rated for ranges of 440 km and 530 km, respectively, and the E5/eMas 7 is claimed to take 20 minutes for a 30-80% recharge via DC.
Geely also claimed the new Aegis ‘short blade’ battery survived extreme testing for impressive safety performance. Tests include eight simultaneous puncture needles (seven more than the standard), each with a diameter of five mm and left in that state for one hour with no incident. Additionally, a 5.8mm (5.8×42mm) infantry rifle bullet penetration test was conducted with no thermal ignition events.
In terms of external dimensions, the eMas 7 measures 4,615 mm long, 1,901 mm wide, 1,670 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. This places it in the ballpark of C-segment SUVs, such as category stalwart the Honda CR-V that is longer at 4,691 mm, but slightly narrower at 1,866 mm. The eMas 7 is slightly larger than Proton’s own C-SUV, the X70, which is 4,519 mm long and 1,831 mm wide.
