A recent report by Nikkei Asia indicates Toyota and Subaru will work together once again to jointly develop an electric vehicle (EV), which will begin production in January 2026 at Subaru’s Yajima plant in Japan’s Gunma prefecture.
Details of the new EV are highly limited for now, but it will reportedly take the shape of an SUV and incorporate parts from Toyota’s bZ4X and other models. The bZ4X and its nearly identical sister, the Subaru Solterra, were born from an earlier joint development, with both making their debuts in 2021.
The decision to standardise key components is said to help both carmakers reduce production costs and shorten development time. Another model pairing that resulted from the partnership is the Toyota GR86 and second-generation Subaru BRZ.
Production of the new electric car will see up to 20,000 vehicles roll off the production line each month, with key markets being in North America, Europe and Japan. In May this year, Subaru said it would mutually supply four EV models with Toyota by the end of 2026, which is a safer option rather than going at it alone.
