The ‘Careers’ section of the Tesla website has turned up a job opening for a battery cell supplier industrialisation engineer, with the candidate set to be based in Malaysia, specifically in Perai. The full-time position is interesting as it is probably the first in the country listed by the company for its supply chain from its previous sales, service and IT listings.
The role will have the successful applicant develop, qualify, scale up and optimise manufacturing and quality system procedures for battery cell manufacturing, working closely with various internal and external organisations, including suppliers.
The latter could involve those close by, in Penang, given that the island state has seen increased activity on the battery-related front in recent times. In December last year, it was announced that Chinese lithium battery manufacturer INV New Material Technology had broken ground for a battery separator factory it was building at the Penang Technology Park in Bertam, Kepala Batas.
The project aims to produce four billion square metres of wet-process separators and coated separators annually, from a total investment of RM6.4 billion over two phases of construction.
While the battery cell is a key component in Tesla vehicles, the development of these may not necessarily be for those used in its cars, as it also utilises its batteries for energy storage solutions like its Megapack and Powerwall. Components for these come from an assortment of suppliers, and from various places – Malaysia could be one of them.
