The construction of the five Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) stations, which were revived after being cancelled previously, will now cost the entire project an additional RM5.3 billion.
This is according to deputy transport minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, who added that these stations are expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2028. At the moment, Prasarana Malaysia is finalising the technical and financial aspects of the additional contract agreement for the project.
The design scope for the five stations located at Tropicana, Raja Muda, Temasya, Bukit Raja and Bandar Botanik is expected to begin in Q1 2025, with construction set to start in Q4 the same year. The project is expected to be completed by Q4 2027, with operations to commence sometime in Q2 2028.
The LRT3 project was approved in 2015 with an initial cost of RM31.65 billion, but this was reduced to RM16.63 billion in 2018 by reducing the project scope, which saw some stations axed. The project’s scope was later expanded with the return of the five stations mentioned – this was announced during the tabling of Budget 2024.
With the additional RM5.3 billion needed for the construction of the five (previously provisional) stations, the total cost of the LRT3 project is now RM21.93 billion. “When compared with the original cost, the latest expenditure still reflects a saving of RM9.72 billion. The finance ministry is currently considering the funding sources for this reinstated scope,” said Hasbi.
Stretching a total of 37 km, the LRT3 project will commuters within the western corridor of Klang Valley from Bandar Utama to Johan Setia. As of Q3 this year, the overall linewide progress is at 97.14%.
