The Porsche 911 Carrera T returns to the German sports car model line in its 992-generation facelift, and the relatively pared-back model variant now includes the cabriolet bodystyle for the first time, as well as a six-speed manual gearbox that is now the variant’s sole choice of transmission.
Pitched as the ‘puristic Carrera for superlative driving pleasure’, the 992.2 Carrera T is claimed to weigh 1,478 kg in its lightest configuration with full bucket seats, or over 40 kg lighter than the base 992 facelift Carrera. This is now also the only Carrera model in the manufacturer’s current line-up that is offered with a manual transmission, and the other way to get a manual in a current 911 is the GT division’s 911 GT3.
Powertrain is comprised of the manufacturer’s 3.0 litre twin-turbo boxer six-cylinder petrol engine that outputs 394 PS and 450 Nm of torque, sent to the rear wheels through the aforementioned six-speed manual transmission that incorporates auto-blipping to match engine and gearbox speeds when downshifting.
Basic performance stats of the 992 facelift Carrera T are 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds (4.7 seconds for the Cabriolet), and a top speed of 295 km/h for the coupé; the cabriolet does a maximum of 293 km/h.
Standard-fit equipment on the Carrera T includes a sports exhaust system, rear-axle steering in conjunction with a quicker steering rack, along with PASM adaptive sports suspension that is 10 mm lower than the regular Carrera variants.
The rear-axle steering and anti-roll bars on the Carrera T have been tuned specifically for the variant to offer neutral handling, says Porsche. Wheels are 20- and 21-inch diameter units from the Carrera S, shod in tyres measuring 245/35 ZR20 and 305/30 ZR21 front and rear, respectively.
Exterior kit for the 992 facelift Carrera T includes the spoiler lip from the Carrera GTS, while other distinguishing elements are Vanadium Grey Metallic-painted rear lid grille inlays, exterior mirror covers, and the alloy wheels. An added tip of the hat to its driving enthusiast slant is the sticker on the rear window panel depicting the shift pattern of its six-speed manual gearbox.
Interior appointments continue the variant-specific equipment list for the Carrera T, which packs a shortened gear lever that is topped by an open-pore walnut-laminated gearknob, with ring patterns reminiscent of the style of the gearknob on historic race cars like the Porsche 917.
Further standard equipment includes the sports multi-function steering wheel in leather trim (a Race-Tex trim version is optional) with mode selector, while the dashboard and centre console get Vanadium Grey inserts, and door panel inlays are black brushed aluminium.
Standard seating equipment is a pair of four-way electrically adjustable sports seats in Sport-Tex upholstery in front, and the tartan fabric pattern used here is exclusive to the Carrera T. As with most Porsche models, options can be had; the Carrera T can be specified with the 18-way adjustable Adaptive Sports Seats Plus, or lightweight full bucket seats.
A new derivative of a Porsche brings another opportunity to peruse the manufacturer’s selection of exterior paint schemes, and so the Carrera T is offered with a range of choices. Under the ‘Legends’ scheme is Shade Green Metallic, Crayon, and Slate Grey Neo, while the ‘Dreams’ scheme brings Guards Red, Lugano Blue, Gentian Blue Metallic and Cartagena Yellow Metallic.
Joining these are the Shades scheme for those who are after a greyscale selection, which brings Jet Black Metallic, GT Silver Metallic and Ice Grey Metallic, as well as the basic Black and White choices. Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus schemes can be commissioned for the Carrera T, while for the fabric roof of the Carrera T cabriolet, a selection of black, red, blue and brown is offered.
