KL-Karak Highway widening project expected to begin January 2025; to include new two-lane tunnel

The highway widening project for the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway is expected to commence in January 2025, the Dewan Rakyat was told, reported Bernama.

The highway concessionaire, AFA Prime Berhad – formerly known as Anih Berhad – is in the process of finalising the project design before commencing physical construction on-site, deputy works minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said.

“This delay is due to a change in shareholders that has only recently been finalised. According to the concession agreement, the construction period for the KL-Karak Highway widening is four years, and it is expected to be completed by 2029,” said the deputy works minister. The widening project for the KL-Karak Highway was previously announced to commence in the second quarter of 2024.

This widening project will cover a distance of 45.3 km with total cost of RM2.1 billion, and among the scope of work is adding of one lane to Section 1, from the Gombak toll plaza to Genting Sempah to become a total of four lanes. Section 2 will also receive widening from two lanes to three lanes, from Genting Sempah to Bentong.

The project will also involve the construction of a new two-lane tunnel adjacent to the existing tunnel in the eastbound direction, according to the report.

In response to a supplementary question in the Dewan Rakyat on whether the government intends to reduce the current operation of three toll plazas at Karak, Bentong and Gombak to one toll plaza at a suitable location, Ahmad Maslan said that the KL-Karak Highway operates under an open toll system, and any consolidation from three tolls to one would have implications on the prior agreement that was signed.
