In addition to the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept, Toyota’s line-up for this year’s SEMA Show also includes the RAV-X Concept. Designed for off-road enthusiasts by the Toyota Service Parts and Accessories Development (SPAD), it is based on a plug-in hybrid RAV4 Prime and draws inspiration from Dakar Rally machines.
This isn’t just a render but a fully working vehicle, with SPAD engineers handling everything from initial sketches and CAD designs to 3D-printed parts and final assembly. Modifications made include raising the vehicle height by 51 mm as well as increasing the track width by 160 mm.
Custom internal-bypass dampers from Fox were also fitted front and rear, each with dual-speed compression adjustment. To ensure the fluid within the dampers operate within their thermal limits, there are also front external reservoirs and piggyback-style reservoirs at the rear. Forged aluminium front lower control arms and forged aluminium rear upper supports were also installed.
The concept also gets a Dakar-inspired front bumper with integrated cooling ducts and bespoke fender flares with front-wheel ventilation. High clearance front and rear skid plates also protect the undercarriage while raised rocker panels contribute to increased clearance. To fill the wheel wells, the 17-inch forged aluminium wheels painted white are paired with 265/65 profile tyres.
As for the rear, there’s an aggressive rear spoiler that works with venting throughout the front fascia to relieve engine and front wheel well pressure zones as part of the aerodynamic package. A high-clearance dual exhaust integrated into the rear bumper completes the overall package.
The finished creation certainly looks like its ready to take on rough trails but it is unlikely that this concept will be turned into a production vehicle that customers can buy. Nonetheless, it’s a pretty exciting thing to behold if you’re an off-road fan.
