The 2024 edition of the Tokyo Auto Salon Kuala Lumpur (TASKL) opens its doors to the public today. Taking place at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) from November 8-10, this year’s show boasts an even larger floor space of 170,000 square feet to accommodate a fleet of specially imported modified cars from Japan as well as many more from local owners.
Over the course of the three-day event, you can look forward to plenty of activities, including lucky draws, performances, live music, live car auctions as well as meet and greet sessions with famous Japanese tuners and TAS race queens.
The final day of TASKL on Sunday will be particularly exciting as there will be a lucky draw to determine the winners of a Honda Civic Type R and an E36 BMW 3 Series. If you want to participate, you’ll need to purchase specific ‘Type R’ tickets that cost an additional RM28 on top of the standard prices – get them here.
Of course, the cars are the main attraction of TASKL, and members of the media were given an early preview which we’re sharing with you here. The main event space takes up three halls of MITEC and are called Shibuya, Shinjuku and Akihabara, which serve as temporary homes for not only the cars imported from Japan for the event, but also locally-owned cars and those that are part of local car clubs.
As you enter the large hall, you’ll be greeted by the Mitsubishi booth, which features the latest Triton modified to replicate the look of the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) competition pick-up truck. It is joined by a souped-up facelifted Xpander as well as The Extreminator, a passion project by Eddy Gino, who also brought along a Toyo Tires-themed Triton.
Subaru also has a booth at TASKL where it is showcasing the special ‘Kuala Lumpur Edition’ livery created in partnership with Motorsport Playground for the BRZ and WRX. The one-of-a-kind cars, along with an exclusive collection of clothing produced in collaboration with homegrown streetwear brand Pestle & Mortar Clothing, are available for purchase – we were told the cars, as they are, will each cost RM260k.
At either ends of the hall are the Legendary Japan Cars Pavillion, which is where you get to see the cars brought in for the show. These include the two7 Bagged Honda NSX, Toyota Alphard SC 2020 Full Rowen Body Kit, Toyota GRT86 SZ BN Sports Demo Car, Toyota Copen GR Sports, RE Amemiya RX-7, Veilside FFZ400, GR Supra BLS Aero Program, Black Label LC500GT Wide Body, Nissan GT-R Nismo, Kuhl Racing 35R-2024 Edition, HKS R35 Neo GT1000+ Concept, Top Secret R35Gold M24 SPL, Top Secret T-spec GTR, GRMN Yaris and Vellfire by Rohan Izawa Art Design.
A standout model – at least for us – was Rocky Auto’s 2000GT Open-Model, which is a recreation of Toyota’s iconic sports car that had its roof chopped off so Sean Connery could sit gracefully as he led Spectre agents on a chase out of Tokyo in the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice.
Another highlight of TASKL is the Rauh-Welt Begriff (RWB) corner, which is home to only a few classic and modern Porsche 911s touched by Akira Nakai. These include Hanabi and Kagayaki, which we’ve covered in our previous post and are the ninth and tenth RWB cars to be built here.
As you reach and exceed your daily step goal at the event, you’ll see a wide variety of makes and models that have been modified to suit their owners’ tastes. The FL5 Honda Civic Type R is especially prevalent this year, but there are also cars from German, British, Italian, Swedish, American and even Chinese brands on display.
No shortage of merchandise on offer either, including official TASKL goodies and several other booths selling car parts as well as scale models if you’re looking for something a little more special to you.
Today is the first day of TASKL 2024, and if you’re looking to check out some cool, unique or outrageous cars, you still have until the end of this weekend to make your way to MITEC for the event.
