Penang Island parking rates to increase by 50% from March 2025 to help maintain, upgrade PSP system

Parking rates in Penang will be increased by 50% at designated locations on the island for Penang Smart Parking (PSP) users beginning March 2025. With this revision, parking rates will be raised from RM0.40 to RM0.60 for 30 minutes, RM0.80 to RM1.20 for an hour, and RM6 to RM9 for a full day.

As reported by The Star, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the fee adjustment was necessary to cover the maintenance of parking sensors and implement upgrades to improve the PSP system.

“This increase is not about generating profit. Our main goal is to ensure the parking system operates efficiently and continues to benefit all users. It also helps regulate parking durations to ensure fair access for everyone,” he said.

“The last increase was in 2014, when 30-minute rates were raised from 30 sen to 40 sen. Before that, rates hadn’t changed since the 1990s,” Rajendran told FMT.

On a related matter, PSP users will benefit from reduced annual parking rates, which will be lowered from RM1,800 to RM1,200 between March and December next year. However, monthly charges will remain unchanged at RM150.

Same excuse as previous governments…’never reviewed the price since…..’. BN, PN, PH semua pun sama.

By the time Penangites woke up, they would have found it too late as their beautiful island has been sold piecemeal to foreigners by DAP and their no longer allowed to stay on the island anymore.

Why didnt Gerard ask Rajendran what are the types of sensors and what mainatenance is needed…
Sensors rarely need maintenance until or unless it is physically damaged or the alignment has run out!

Good. And they should start saman illegally parked cars. Should be a windfall for MBPP. The less cars in Penang, the better.

You need a robust public transportation first before even think about ‘the less cars the better’. This parking fine won’t stop people from driving

  • “to cover the maintenance of parking sensors and implement upgrades to improve the PSP system.”

Actually what he said is full of crap because no one uses those sensors to see if parking spaces are available because they’re so unreliable. What’s the point of maintaining/upgrading something that no one ever uses?

With how cutthroat competitive Penang street parking is, people simply use their eyes to scan for vacant parking lots. By the time you check the app for the slot it’ll be gone by the time you reach said slot.
