Motorcyclists running red lights need to be addressed with advocacy, awareness campaigns – Lee Lam Thye

Stricter measures are required in order to address the number of motorcyclists running red lights, said social activist and Road Safety Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, reported New Straits Times.

While Lee supports the proposal by the traffic police to make red light violations a non-compoundable offence, he warned against the potential strain that the move may impose upon the country’s already overloaded judicial system, according to the report.

“Making red-light violations non-compoundable is a step in the right direction, but the courts must be prepared to handle the potential surge in cases. At the same time, we need to prioritise continuous awareness campaigns to change public attitudes,” he said.

Lee emphasised the importance of combining enforcement with advocacy and road safety awareness campaigns, and suggested creative approaches to encourage compliance. “Motorcyclists who obey traffic lights can be rewarded with certificates or small tokens of appreciation. This recognition could motivate others to follow suit,” Lee said to New Straits Times.

Eight out of 10 motorcyclists ignore red lights, and this sends a dangerous message to younger riders, the road safety activist said. “This behaviour is unacceptable and must be addressed before it becomes normalised,” Lee added.

Court overloaded? Com’on, were the offenders ever get hauled to court for running red lights? If nobody give them summons or follow up on their summons, how will the case ends up in court?

At the same time, please address the need to have so many traffic lights. Some within metres from another, some at roundabouts etc. Also, the timing of the traffic lights are not synchronised for smooth traffic flow or changing in very short periods.

Haiyo…that’s the issue here…when too many break the law…then close one eye by the authorities.

But when few break the law, then kena punish kaw kaw. This is really double standard!!!

Buang masa only awareness campaign. As if people with licence can claim not aware what the 3 coloured lights on the tiang are. This is really a case of spare the rod, spoil everyone. Make the rotan bigger and inescapable. What for need treats for following the law…then the rest who’ve been obeying for so long get what?

Advocacy? Dear sir, you must be going senile. If advocacy works, we won’t be seeing this problem since the days of Ling Liong Sik.

The best way to address this – absolve all motorists of wrongdoing in accidents involving motorcyclists breaking the law.

If a motorcyclist runs the red light and hit your car, the driver will be charged with “reckless driving”. If a motorcyclist goes against traffic and hits you and dies, you’ll be charged with reckless driving causing death.

At every turn, motorcyclists are not required to obey any laws.

Red means stop, simple as that echoed by one of the comment above. If it clearly against the law, please punish them. Don’t go around in your motorbikes looking for people using their phones (yes, they are guilty too but pls prioritize).

And please, no discount. No point la.

  • Dear MOT Mr.Loke,

JPJ DRIVING LICENSE RENEWAL – YEARLY EXAM
To improve safety among road users,
I suggest yearly compulsory exam for driving license renewal.
Since we already have MyJPJ App, these exam will make easier to access.
Min 10 question would not be much a burden.

motorcyclist issues has been rampant since decades ago. It is nothing new. Nothing has been properly done to address these issues, so they continue to be even more daring every day. Now motorcyclist disregards traffic laws completely and who is to blame? sometimes I even see traffic police ignoring a motorbike who rides against traffic flow, or make illegal turns, or drive on the pavement/divider. If the law ignores them, what more is there to say?

  • Dumb idea to reward those that obey traffic rules for motorcyclist. Impose the maximum fine for each and every red light offence without the chance of discount.
