Geely not forgetting Proton – still committed to make Tg Malim its production and R&D hub for ASEAN

Geely not forgetting Proton – still committed to make Tg Malim its production and R&D hub for ASEAN

Geely has set up shop in Thailand and will be entering Australia and New Zealand next year – all right-hand-drive (RHD) markets – but the carmaker remains committed to Malaysia as its regional production and R&D hub.

“Geely remains dedicated to its initial pledge of making AHTV the regional production and R&D hub for the ASEAN markets,” Ash Sutcliffe, PR director of the Geely Holding Group told paultan.org in response to questions on the company’s commitment to Proton and Malaysia.

Automotive Hi-Tech Valley (AHTV) was announced in April 2022 as an international automotive hub for NEVs (new energy vehicles, China’s term for electrified vehicles), spearheaded by Geely. AHTV is in the Tanjung Malim area, which is also the home of Proton.

Geely not forgetting Proton – still committed to make Tg Malim its production and R&D hub for ASEAN

“Geely will enter and establish dealer networks in Proton’s non-existent markets, starting with NEV products to build brand reputation, which will be complementary to Proton’s existing products,” Sutcliffe added. This means that both Proton and Geely brands will not enter the same markets – while Proton was previously present in Thailand and Australia, the Malaysian brand has since ceased operations in those markets.

“Geely will leverage its resources in these markets, either to assist Proton’s future entry or to export products from Malaysia using AHTV as a production hub, maximizing synergies with Proton and our partner DRB-Hicom,” Geely’s PR chief said. Full context here.

When such a serious question is merely answered by the PR chief, not even PR director, you kind of know the problem is real.

Its an open secret that Dr.Li has a fallout with the DRB cartel of vendors who refused to lower prices of parts by 30%.
So,quietly Geely pindah to the Detriot of Asia…Thailand.
It lets the Thais produce a cheaper range of products for direct export to overseas market…no need share profits with DRB.
Now with BAIC,BYD,Dong Feng all making huge inroads into our auto market ,with affordable EVs n hybrids..Proton will soon see market share dwindle to 15 %…with the first coffin casualty being overpriced X90.
Matter of time,Geely use Thailand to expand into South East Asian and west Asian markets.
Tanjong Malim is just a glorified “showroom”.

frankly, if you’re an established automotive giant like Geely, what incentive is there to use a tiny, unknown brand like Proton?

So now Proton can finally kick its legs and no need any RHD LHD nonsense just fully re-badge its latest model while launching locally months/years later.

Sure committed, like making Malaysia the only country that sells the 1.5L TGDi 3Cyl engine that all other countries Geely overseas have changed to 1.5L TGDi 4Cyl with better fuel efficiency & power.

other than pride (maruah), there’s nothing good about having Proton anyway. Just sell Geely models directly here. Consumer wins.

Waiting for Proton management to completely fail. Geely will then take over the top management and snr management. The locals will be executers in the middle and lower management.

Based on global market expectations, Geely will probably end up banking into Proton. High tariffs (taxes) from Trump and EU on Chinese car brands will have a big impact on Geely’s global sales, even now impacting Volvo since Geely fully own them & most of their EVs are made in China. Its easy to expect the Aussies to follow suit.

The 0.1% extra ownership of Proton for DRB-HICOM could be Geely’s saving grace to continue competing in the global market.

  • This is just excuse by geely, they knew proton name already tercalar in those countries. Proton should fight back saying they can built RHD, no need geely unless they want to go to middle east.

At this point, Proton should divorce with geely. If not proton turning into perodua 2.0

Geeky, this is bs news. You have failed on your promise. Thailand is ASEAN. You need to send Proton’s there, not Geely’s. If you can’t keep to your promises, please leave and exit Malaysia.
