2025 Geely EX5 EV – registrations open for Proton eMas 7 twin in Australia; 218 PS, claimed 430 km WLTP

Shortly after the official launch of the Proton eMas 7 electric SUV, its twin, Geely has opened registrations of interest for its twin, the Geely EX5 in Australia, where the EX5 will go on sale in the first half of next year, according to Drive.

Australia is the next right-hand-drive market that is set to receive the Geely-branded electric SUV, following the model’s market launch in Thailand at the end of November this year. For reference, the EX5 in Thailand starts at 859,000 baht (RM111,100) for the Pro variant, while the Proton eMas 7 Prime in Malaysia starts the range from RM109,800.

In terms of Australian-market specifications, the EX5 will get a 160 kW (218 PS) front-mounted electric motor, which is the same as that specified in the Proton eMas 7 with 320 Nm of torque. For the Malaysian-branded model, this makes it the quickest-accelerating Proton across 0-100 km/h, in 6.9 seconds, while top speed is 175 km/h.

Proton eMas 7 Premium in Malaysia

The Geely Australia website states that the EX5 will have up to 430 km of range on the WLTP testing standard. In Thailand, the EX5 attains a claimed 495 km on the more lenient NEDC standard, while the comparable Galaxy E5 in China is quoted to achieve 530 km on a full charge based on the Chinese domestic CLTC standard.

In Malaysia, the Proton variant with the largest battery of 60.22 kWh capacity is claimed to be capable of 410 km (WLTP), while the eMas 7 Prime does 345 km (WLTP), or 410 km on the NEDC measure.

We have learnt that the Geely EX5 for the Australian market can be specified with 18-inch wheels across variants of both battery sizes – images show the 19-inch wheel design as shared with the eMas 7 Premium – therefore the smaller alloy wheel size paired with the larger-capacity battery should be the contributor to its more generous 430 km WLTP range.

The Australian-market EX5 is claimed to attain a 30-80% recharge in an identical 20 minutes as that achieved by the eMas 7 Premium at 100 kW DC, and the eMas 7 Prime variant at 80 kW DC. Charging rates via AC have yet to be officially confirmed for the Australian EX5, though for reference both variants of the eMas 7 can take up to 11 kW AC, needing 4.9 hours for a full charge of the Prime and 4.1 hours for the Premium.

Locally, the Proton eMas 7 gets equipment that includes a wireless charging pad and 16 Flyme Sound Wanos speakers, including in the front headrests, along with 461 litres of luggage capacity in the rear with another 51 litres beneath the boot floor; this grows to 1,877 litres with the rear seats folded.

Driver assistance kit is a Level 2 ADAS suite across both variants of the Proton eMas 7, including autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert and rear cross traffic braking. This has scored five stars in the ASEAN NCAP assessment with 92.57 points.

In Malaysia, the closest competitor to the eMas 7 will be the BYD Atto 3 Extended Range, which packs 204 PS and 310 Nm from a single front-drive motor, enabling a 0-100 km/h run in 7.3 seconds, and the BYD’s 60.48 kWh battery enables a claimed range of 420 km (WLTP).

  • Geely deserve to take the entire pie in these big volume markets as they put effort, time and money on the car development (no, no, logo design is not counted).

Can we get a 17 inch together with the eMas 7 extended range to boost the range even further? Some of us don’t really dig big rims.
