Chery Malaysia obtains SIRIM certification for EV battery; Tiggo 8 Pro e+ PHEV facelift coming in 2025?

Chery Malaysia has received SIRIM certification for its electric vehicle battery pack, making it the first such achievement for an automotive brand in the country, according to the company.

“Being the first automotive brand in Malaysia to receive the EV battery certification is an incredible honour and a significant milestone for us at Chery Malaysia,” vice president of Chery Malaysia, Michael Chew said in a statement.

The company is also looking forward to obtaining SIRIM certification for its EV batteries for upcoming models that will be offered in the Malaysian market, it added. At present, Chery is represented in the battery-electric vehicle segment in Malaysia with the Omoda E5, which was launched locally in March this year.

The Chery Omoda E5 came to market in a single variant and powertrain specification, priced at RM146,800 on-the-road without insurance, featuring a 204 PS/340 Nm front-mounted drive motor, propelling the vehicle from 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds.

Its battery is a 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit by BYD, offering up to 430 km of range on the WLTP testing standard, with a claimed combined consumption rate of 15.5 kWh per 100 km.

The battery-electric crossover packs a three-phase onboard AC charger rated at up to 9.9 kW, and is capable of taking DC charging at up to 80 kW; the latter enabling a 30-80% state-of-charge in 28 minutes. Conversely, the vehicle also offers V2L capability to provide up to 3.3 kW for appliances and other electrical devices.

Chery Malaysia also disclosed that it plans to expand its range of electrified vehicle offerings in Malaysia to include plug-in hybrids next year. One such model that fits the bill is the Tiggo 8 Pro e+ facelift, that was shown at the MITI Day event in October this year.

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro e+ facelift is offered in its native Chinese market with two sizes of battery, the larger of the two being a 19.27 kWh unit that enables up to 80 km of purely electric driving. The PHEV supports up to 29 KW of DC charging, and up to 6.6 kW AC. Like the Omoda E5, this also supports V2L supply at up to 3.3 kW.

The unit shown in Malaysia at the MITI event appeared to wear the regular “face” of the facelift, instead of the PHEV-specific one we’ve seen in China. This isn’t be the first time faces are swapped around for Chery in Malaysia, as our Tiggo 7 Pro actually wears China’s PHEV bumpers (hence the blue highlights). Earlier, Chery Malaysia revealed that the Tiggo 8 Pro e+ will arrive in our market in locally-assembled (CKD) form, as the ICE-powered Tiggo 8 Pro did from its launch.
