Tesla’s Megafactory in Shanghai set for completion

Tesla China has announced that the US electric vehicle maker is slated to complete the build of its new Megafactory in Shanghai by the end of this year. The facility, which began construction in late May, will be dedicated to manufacturing the company’s Megapack, an ultra-large commercial energy storage battery, for the global market.

According to news reports, mass production of batteries is set to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with an initial output of 10,000 units annually, equivalent to about 40 GWh of energy storage. Each Megapack unit can store more than 3 MWh of energy, enough to power 3,600 homes for one hour.

The facility, which spans approximately 200,000 square metres, is the first of its kind to be built by Tesla outside the United States, and is the company’s second plant in Shanghai following the establishment of its Gigafactory – which presently assembles the Model 3 and Model Y – back in 2019.

According to the administration of Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, construction of the plant represents a total investment of around 1.45 billion yuan (RM890 million) from the automaker.
