AWAS speed camera calibration tests at PLUS Menora Tunnel stretch starts today – lane closure, contraflow

PLUS has announced that there will be calibration tests for Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) speed cameras at the Menora Tunnel stretch. Specifically, the tests are slated for today (11pm till 3am the following day) at KM258.25 northbound towards Penang, and tomorrow (also from 11pm) at KM262.5 southbound towards Ipoh.

The affected areas will have lane closures and contraflow lanes – check out the graphics above. Be cautious and follow the traffic signs and crew in the work area.

Last week, transport minister Anthony Loke said that AWAS will be upgraded to adopt a point-to-point method, replacing the current static method. It operates by calculating the average speed of a vehicle by determining the time taken to travel between two points.

“We don’t want drivers to slow down just in front of the camera, but (slow down) within a certain distance. Let’s say between point A and point B, we want to know how long the driver takes. If he uses less time than he should, it means he is speeding and will be subject to action,” he said.

The PLUS Menora Tunnel and KL-Karak Highway, considered as high-risk areas, will be the first to get the new point-to-point AWAS speed cameras – full story here.

You are allowed 10% + 2km/h allowance. Go above that for the whole stretch and you have nobody to blame but yourself. On 110km/h, you have to average 123km/h to kena saman and you think the government is at fault?

Go at 118km/h and be done with it, that’s plenty of speed

  • If this new version AWAS is proven to reduce fatal car accidents on highways, implementing it would be a valuable step, as protecting lives is of utmost importance.

  • Yes, we need this at Karak Highway, Genting Slope Up and Down, Menora Tunnel (in testing),
Name others common dangerous slope down that need speed control for overall safety,

transport minitry, why focus so much on AWAS when there are much more important areas that required funding? potholes have hurt more motorists than the occasional 5kmph exceeding speed limit car.

There are errors and allowancesbuilt into the system. 10%+2kmh is the usual allowance in UK (by and large). So 5km/h above limit means you won’t kena saman even in a 40kmh (40+4+2 = 46kmh) zone.

      Don’t speed. Speed kills
