The works ministry (KKR) has announced that the speed limit on federal roads nationwide will be temporarily reduced by 10 km/h for six days from January 28 to February 2 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration. It said the 90 km/h speed limit on all federal roads classified as such will be reduced to 80 km/h during the period.
In a statement, works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that federal road concessionaires have been instructed to suspend all non-critical construction and maintenance works on roads during the six-day period to avoid disrupting traffic flow.
Emergency or critical works that need to be expedited for the safety of users will be planned properly, and if necessary, alternative routes will be provided so as not to disrupt the travel of users to their intended destinations. He added that an order was issued to PLUS on January 16 to temporarily halt lane widening work on the Sedenak-Kulai alignment from January 23 to February 3, 2025.
The ministry said that the temporary reduction in the speed limit was among the measures being taken by the government to enhance road safety and reduce the risk of accidents during the upcoming festive season. It added that integrated operations involving PDRM, road transport deparment (JPJ), Malaysian road safety research institute (MIROS) and the Malaysian highway authority (LLM) will be carried out during the same period.
