Yup. Not that it’s likely to see the light of day (or will you prove us wrong, Proton?), but that hasn’t stopped rendering guru Theophilus Chin from imagining (or should we say re-imagining) a Proton Satria for the 2020s. A spiritual successor, as he says, to the Proton that never had more doors than three.
Do you see a bit of Mk6 Polo in there? Well, the earlier eMas 3 that Theo did took that very car as its base, and we’d say that the resemblance is stronger here, with fewer doors. Is it also lower than the five-door rendering? The wheelarch gaps look smaller here.
And while Theo’s eMas 3 rendering borrowed heavily from the eMas 7, down to the headlamps, front bumper, bridge-type tail lamps and even wheels, this Satria gets almond-shaped headlamps, a sportier-looking front bumper and individual tail lamps (remember these?). The ‘bare’ nose design is retained, but because there’s less metal here, it doesn’t look so empty.
We think this looks great, but lest our minds float too far into fantasy land, let’s come back down to earth a bit – the only inkling we have that an eMas 3 may happen is Proton’s trademark filing with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO).
The B-segment Xingyuan-based eMas 5, which has been confirmed for this year, is a bigger vehicle which will take on the Perodua EV and the BYD Dolphin. As such, if an eMas 3 does become a reality (in the distant future, mind), it’s likely to be an A-segment, BYD Seagull-sized thing.
But never mind – with the disclaimers out of the way, let’s continue to sit and admire these pocket rocket proportions. In a homogenised SUV world, my eyes haven’t seen these kind of shapes in a long time.
