Proton eMas 7 EV bookings exceed 4,000 units, over 80% for the top Premium variant – 30 dealerships now

The Proton eMas 7 has recorded over 4,000 bookings to date, and over 80% of the names are down for the range-topping Premium variant. We last updated you in end-January and the order books were ‘approaching 4,000 units’ then, with a ‘strong skew towards the Premium’ but 80% is high!

As previously shared, deliveries of the eMas 7 – officially launched on December 16 – started in January and as expected, Proton’s first electric car ended last month on top of the EV league with 421 units registered. That was good for 25% share of the overall EV market, Proton proudly notes.

“It took just one month for the Proton eMas 7 to lead national EV sales, proving Malaysians will make the switch to EVs when the product and price proposition are correct. By using cutting edge technologies mated to a brand new platform wrapped in a practical package, Proton is able to offer its customers a product that can compete against any rival while delivering value and after sales care unmatched in the segment,” said Zhang Qiang, deputy CEO of Proton Edar.

At launch, Proton offered a RM4,000 early bird discount plus other perks in its launch package for the first 3,000 buyers. As that’s all taken up, the company has since extended the promo by another 3,000 units, which means a total of 6,000 units. With the discount, the Premium is priced at RM119,800 and the entry Prime’s RRP is RM105,800.

As Proton didn’t anticipate such a heavy skew towards the Premium, you might get your eMas 7 quick if you opt for the Prime.

“In the short term, customers who opt for the Prime variant may receive their vehicles at an earlier date as deliveries for this model are expected to be fulfilled more quickly. Our target is to deliver 1,000 units by the end of February, with a further ramp-up in March to meet the strong demand,” Pro-Net chief branding officer Salawati Mohd Yusoff told us last month, adding that the 1k-unit mark is usually when a new car starts to be ‘seen on the road’.

To recap, the base Prime and top Premium share a front-mounted electric motor that produces 218 PS (160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. The Prime uses a 49.52 kWh version of Geely’s Aegis short blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for a WLTP-rated range of 345 km (thumbs up to Proton for advertising the more realistic cycle instead of NEDC/CLTC). The Premium’s 60.22 kWh pack delivers 410 km.

Both support AC charging at a max rate of 11 kW, with the Prime needing 4.9 hours for a full charge, and 6.1 hours for the Premium. The range-topper can suck in DC power of up to 100 kW (Prime 80 kW), and both can get from 30-80% SoC in 20 minutes. A V2L function to power external appliances is available, of course.

Battery/range aside, the Premium gets goodies such as 19-inch wheels (Prime 18″), panoramic glass roof (with sunshade), powered tailgate, auto dimming rear view mirror, memory for the driver’s electric seat, powered front passenger seat, ventilated front seats, 256-colour ambient lights, head-up display and a 16-speaker Flyme sound system (six in the Prime).

That’s a lot of extra kit for a premium of just RM14k, which makes it unsurprising that the majority of orders have went the Premium’s way. Aside from the RM4k discount, early birds also get a free 7kW home charger worth RM1,500, a free V2L adaptor worth RM500, a five-year unlimited data package worth RM1,800, low interest rates and a trade-in rebate. Proton says that the launch package is worth RM8,000.

Again, the Prime is priced at RM105,800 after the discount and the Premium is yours for RM119,800 – it’s a lot of car for the money. More on the Proton eMas 7 in our launch report. Also check out a 360-degree tour of the electric SUV and our first impressions.

By the way, there are now 30 Proton eMas dealerships nationwide, including four recently-opened ones in East Malaysia.

The one thing which is glaringly missing from the kit/accessories under Proton/eMas…. is the missing level 1 charger (granny charger). This should be the most basic to allow anyone who doesn’t have the wall charger, can charge (albeit at granny pace)…. from any standard plug point. At least have a recommended 3rd party charger for eMas owners to purchase as an emergency/just-in-case situation. Even for balik kampung, that will make sense right? Also another accessory that I didn’t get to see when test driving was whether as tire repair kit is included as there’s no spare tire

For an SUV with that battery size it’s actually pretty good. If you were to put the same battery in an iX you’ll only get 330 km.

Since this promotion offer is now being offered for the 1st 6000 units why not give buyers an option to the two other interior colours?. Brown or the light white-cream color is really a nice option. Had Proton take a call-in poll on preference of interior colours vs body colour by those that had place their booking?. My top choice will be brown interior with the super white for body color. Regards.
