Police-escorted convoy crosses double solid line on bridge, forces oncoming vehicle towards barrier

Dashcam footage dated Sunday, February 16, 2025 has emerged on the DashCam Malaysia Facebook page, depicting the camera vehicle approaching a bridge for two-way traffic. As the camera vehicle reaches the bridge, a vehicle can be seen on footage being on the wrong side of the road, facing the camera vehicle in its lane.

This would emerge to be Proton X70 in police livery, which can also be seen to be the lead vehicle escorting a multi-car convoy, comprised of a black Toyota Camry, black Toyota Vellfire, black Volvo XC60 and a black Lexus LX570. All vehicles bar the Vellfire in the convoy appear to have blue strobe lights.

The first four of the five-car convoy were also depicted to be positioned well past the double solid white lines, forcing the camera vehicle towards the road shoulder, next to the barrier. The camera vehicle repositioned within its lane after the escorted convoy had passed.

In March 2024, we reported that the Malaysian parliament had passed several amendments to the Police Act 1967 (Act 344), including an amendment to Clause 4 which now provides for the police to carry out escort duties.

While a legal expert had said prior to this report that there was no such law that required motorists to give way to a VIP convoy on the road, former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had said at the time that road users who defy police instructions – particularly in refusing to give way to VIP convoys when asked – can be penalised under the Police Act, Road Traffic Act and the Penal Code.

This subsection has also been amended to increase the severity of punishment, so those caught opposing the police carrying out any escort duty may be may be fined up to RM10,000 and jailed for up to two years. This was previously RM200 and two months’ jail.

  • As usual. Nothing new with this. Force people off the road. Force people to do emergency braking on the roads. Force emergency vehicles to give way. What’s new?

How many more times is this going to happen before any action is taken? All these VIPs are forever living in a main character mentality. Transport minister quick to jump when the public does something wrong but silent as a mouse when VIP puts others at risk?

On what basis do they have to drive across the double line? Bad example to other road users.

The need for police escort is not the issues here. The issues to be brought up here is why would the police escort crosses the double line marking. All those escorted cars does not need to use wider road unlike our armoured vehicles… If police escort kept to their lane across the bridge no issues

This has becoming more common nowadays. As if rakyat’s life has no value in the eyes of vip/vvip and their escorts. Remember the tow trucks carrying vvip’s car simply endangering other road users while being escorted by police. We know when to give way but please don’t put our lives at risk like this. We have families and children to feed

Priorities in this country all backwards. So much effort to ammend the act for escort duties only, and it appears they can do whatever they want with no onus on them to provide direction to road users other than ‘get out of the way or you’ll be fined’. I don’t see similar legislative efforts for other emergency vehicles like ambulances/fire engines/civil defense other than most Malaysian road users are civic minded enough to give way to these vehicles (but not always). Tried searching for the relevant clauses in the road transport act but best could find is a KKM ambulance drivers conduct guideline. Couldn’t find a similar document for bomba although these must exist somewhere (I hope). Be good if any lawyers reading this could point out errors or relevant legistlation that deal with this issue.

Malaysians bangunlah, your lives not as important as the so called “VIP’s” ah?

    1. only allow police escort on official functions ie going to official meetings etc
    2. but only when there is heavy congestion , otherwise plan journey like other people, set off earlier
    3. ambulance and bomba must be given priority
    4. anyone abusing the privilege should be punished heavily
    5. follow traffic rules . this country has laws that should apply to all for safety reasons.

also PAC should ask for audit on how much is spent on all these escort duties . Rakyat has a right to know who is using the service and at what cost to the country . cost benefit analysis. country not as rich now so have to be more mindful

  • If there is escort clause, police may need to carry out it’s duty accordingly.

However, the road should still subjected to 1 basic rule. If any accident happened, the escort PIC in full responsibility, regardless of it’s siren or notice.

Regardless of it’s siren or notice, it’s never safe enough, full compensation to others to be done immediately, including vehicle time lost usage.

  • Too many ViP’s. If red light, escort comes and force you to move, if accident, they can’t be bothered. Your problem.
Cop on main road suddenly stop you from entering from side road as VIP passing. Another car knock you from behind. Cop just look and move away. Not his problem although he caused it.
Every traffic light junction VIP suppose to pass has a traffic cop on standby to override the traffic light. If 20 junction, 20 traffic cops will be needed just so VIP can pass through seamlessly. It’s a waste of resource.
This new traffic law puts the law put emphasis on elites welfare. Did these elites pay for the escort? I doubt it.

Because of the Asian feudal mentality. All seems to adore their ‘dear leaders’ regardless of whether their actions are right or wrong. This happens across party lines, regardless of ideology.

I wish everyone treats the political leaders as what they are, the people’s servants, and stop taking them too seriously. Stop praising them and giving titles for stuff they are paid to be doing anyway.
