BYD sells almost a million cars in Q1, exports up 111%

Having sold 377,420 EVs globally in March, BYD’s sales in the first quarter of 2025 (1Q25) have hit 990,711 passenger vehicles (+59% year-on-year, or YoY), reports Car News China, a record 206,084 of which were sold outside China (+111% YoY). In fact, as of yesterday, BYD’s year-to-date global sales reached 1,000,804 vehicles – that’s a jump of over 10,000 units in one day.

The Chinese giant sold more plug-in hybrids (569,710 PHEVs, +76% YoY) than battery-electric vehicles (416,388 EVs, +39% YoY) in 1Q25, echoing its 2024 full-year performance. The EV pie slice has shrunk to 42% (from 48% in 1Q24), whereas that for PHEVs has grown from 52% to 58%.

March saw 350,615 BYD-badged vehicles (+23% YoY), 12,620 Denzas (+22.8% YoY), 8,051 Fangchengbaos (+126% YoY) and 133 Yangwangs sold. The same month saw 395,091 vehicles produced (+33% YoY) and 72,723 units exported (+90% YoY, +9% month-on-month), making it the best export month in BYD’s history.

BYD sold three million vehicles in 2023, 4.3 million in 2024 and expects to deliver around 5.5 million units in 2025 and 6.5 million in 2026. As of March 2025, it has cumulatively sold over 11.6 million EVs.
