Government considering inclusion of motorcycle lanes on future highways in Malaysia – works ministry

The works ministry is considering the inclusion of motorcycle lanes on new highways as part of long-term efforts aimed at keeping motorcyclists safe, reported Bernama. While the addition of motorcycle lane infrastructure may need greater investment, it is necessary to address to high rate of motorcycle accidents in the country, said works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

“We are well aware of the statistics by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) which show that many fatalities in Malaysia are caused by motorcycle accidents. so it is indeed something we are focusing on. The way forward is that when we build highways, we should consider having dedicated motorcycle lanes,” Nanta said.

The works ministry is working with industry players such as PLUS Malaysia to establish designated shelter areas for motorcyclists for use in bad weather, especially on elevated highways due to limitations in expanding road structures on existing highways, the minister said.

“Many riders tend to stop under bridges when it rains or along emergency lanes. We have seen cases where they were hit by vehicles that could not see them clearly during rain,” Nanta said.

Are you going to collect toll from the bikers? Or car owners have to bear the cost in the name of bantuan kepada B40? Will it also include this statement “Kenaikan toll tidak akan membebankan pengguna”.

  • Motorcyclist will not use these lanes even if it’s built. Go see federal Highway where they blatantly disregard the rules.
Plus who will bear the extra cost of the motorcycle lanes.

Have you ever been on Federal highway motorcycle lane? While I highly encourage the use of motorcycle lane on Federal, there are multiple times where the motorcycle lane are inaccessible.
      1. Entrance to Motorcycle Lane from certain roads are not available.
      2. Closure of motorcycle lane due to construction or broken road.
      3. Flooding of motorcycle lane during rain.

Ignoring the fact that motorcycle lane are not maintain and have build up of mud or even fallen trees, How would you use the motorcycle lane given all these factor?

Why not stricter regulations and penalties for those who doesn’t use the motor lane first? if they are not using it why are we still wasting money?

Consider making it illegal for bikers to ride on the dotted line. They’re notorious for preventing cars that want to cross lanes.
