Lexus has announced it will unveil the all-new ES on April 23, 2025 at the upcoming Auto Shanghai. The current ES, which is in its seventh generation, made its debut in 2018 at Auto China in Beijing and has been given two facelifts (in 2021 and 2014) in the seven years it has been around.
Ahead of the premiere of the eighth-generation ES, Toyota has released teasers of the model that hint at some of the design cues we can expect. Based on what we can make out, the upcoming ES will have a more sloped roofline than before. Up front, the LED daytime running lights have a “Nike-like swoosh” design similar to the RZ, with the main headlamps located just below and surrounded by black trim.
Moving to the rear, we find a full-width light bar accompanying the slender taillights, and the placement of the third brake light at the base of the rear window indicates the model will remain a traditional sedan instead of a five-door liftback, despite what the new silhouette suggests.
Lexus says the new ES will be “a global flagship model that refines advanced electrification technologies and pursues further evolution of its the hallmark quietness and ride comfort.” Called the ES a global flagship model makes us question the future of the larger LS, which was discontinued in the United Kingdom earlier this year due to poor sales but continues to be sold in other markets.
As for the electrification mention, the teasers do show the ES with what looks to be charge port doors on the front fenders, suggesting a plug-in hybrid (or even fully electric) powertrain will be made available alongside regular hybrid options. We’ll only know more when the model makes its debut next week.
