Highway concessionaire AFA Prime Berhad (formerly known as ANIH Berhad) has announced the widening of the KL-Karak Expressway (KLK) is scheduled to begin in Q2 2025 – previously planned to start at the end of February this year.
This will cover the KM19.2 to KM64.5 stretch between the Gombak and Bentong toll plazas, and will have a construction timeline of 48 months. Preparatory works such as slope trimming, drainage upgrades, flood mitigation and retaining wall construction are already in progress.
The project will see the addition of one lane in each direction and the widening of road shoulders from 2.5 to three metres on both sides, in compliance with the guidelines set by the Malaysia Highway Authority (LLM).
This will allow for the flexible activation of the shoulders as Smartlanes during peak periods (weekends and festive seasons), effectively increasing the number of operational lanes and significantly improving traffic flow.
Additionally, eight new emergency bays will be added, allowing vehicles with breakdowns to be quickly cleared from active lanes in order to minimise disruption and enhancing motorist safety. Given the Genting Sempah tunnel is identified as a high-traffic zone, construction in this area will be limited to non-peak hours, while night visibility will be improved with floodlights and existing lighting will be repositioned for maximum effect upon completion.
The company also said in its release that flood mitigation works along the East Coast Expessway 1 (LPT1) have already begun and includes comprehensive risk assessments, drainage upgrades and infrastructure enhancements to reduce the risk of flash flooding along the route.
Throughout the construction phase, the company has appointed Edgenta PROPEL Berhad as its traffic management partner. Safety assets that will be deployed include barriers, cones, signage, flagmen, patrol teams as well as digital variable message systems (VMS).

No need to widen pun, just buang toll booth gombak, karak and bentong or replace with MLFF…settle masalah jam
I was thinking the same thing. But on busy weekends, going uphill Also jam due to slow lorries.
Why replace with MLFF when PH had janji above? Sudah dicapati?
NS highway KL-ipoh needs to be widen too.
new track for me…
Even with 10 lanes will not solve the jam. Scrap all vehicles above 20yrs and you will see instant results. Msia has the most junkies on the road. No point wasting money on road widening.
4 years mean 8 years in Msia. Gd luck guys balik Kampung hahahaha.
Baguslah akhirnya ada juga projek yang memanfaatkan rakyat. Tol bila nak murahkan? Kawan2 dari luar negara semuanya terkejut bila nampak tol setial 10 minit kat KL. Satu dunia mereka lawat tak pernah jumpa tol sebanyak Malaysia
big project… big money in pocket la…
if this madonon gov really serious about jam…then implement what “Pengguna LPT” suggested…
doing the same thing over and over(widening roads) and expecting to reduce traffic jams is stupidity!! everyone know the jams are at the toll booths!!
No need to widen, just apply contra lane for Fridays, Sundays and all festive seasons specifically Aidilfitri and Aidiladha.
