Geely Galaxy E5 to get 68.4 kWh battery, 610 km CLTC range in China; updated Proton eMas 7 LR soon?

Geely Galaxy E5 to get 68.4 kWh battery, 610 km CLTC range in China; updated Proton eMas 7 LR soon?

A new, extended-range version of the Geely Galaxy E5 has been unveiled through filings with the Chinese ministry of industry and information technology (MIIT). This will reportedly feature a battery pack with a capacity of 68.39 kWh, which is said to offer 610 km of range on the CLTC Chinese domestic testing cycle.

This bring a 15% increase in CLTC-rated range from the larger, 68.39 kWh battery capacity over that of the 60.22 kWh pack, and thus the same increase in terms of the more stringent WLTP testing standard would bring that figure to around 470 km.

The current selection of battery packs available to the Geely Galaxy E5/Geely EX5 are the 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh versions, offering 440 km and 530 km of range respectively (CLTC); in Malaysia, the Proton eMas 7 with the same battery options gets WLTP battery range ratings of 345 km and 410 km, respectively.

Currently, it remains unclear if Geely will retain all three battery options with the inclusion of the latest, 68.39 kWh battery, or if one of the current two battery specifications will be discontinued.

According to the regulatory filing, the long-range variant of the Galaxy E5 will continue to employ a 160 kW single-motor powertrain, which is the 218 PS/320 Nm unit that powers the eMas 7. This will also support DC fast charging and regular AC charging, as well as up to 3.3 kW in vehicle-to-load (V2L) electricity supply to external devices.

The long-range variant of the Galaxy E5 is expected to share is exterior dimensions with the current versions, which measure 4,615 mm long, 1,901 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. As with the eMas 7 in Malaysia, the long-range Galaxy E5 is expected to feature 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels.

With the Proton eMas 7 being effectively based on the EX5/Galaxy E5 duo, this could open the door for the Malaysian-branded electric SUV to gain the larger-capacity battery and thus, longer range too. In Malaysia, the eMas 7 was launched in two variants, starting with the Prime (49.52 kWh battery) at RM105,800, and the Premium (60.22 kWh battery) at RM119,800.

The gradual decrease of EV battery cost (going less than USD100 per KW) should provide more opportunities for car makers to offer battery leasing service (with capacity upgrades over 2-3 years interval). Or if not, Proton should update the premium spec with the new 67KW battery & the Prime with 60KW version.

The upcoming eMas5 battery capacity is too low (WLTP rated), it should adopt the 60KW for the basic spec (400km+) to compete with Perodua EV or the Dolphin.
