Bermaz Q4 profits drop to a three-year low – slump attributed to competition from influx of Chinese brands

Bermaz Auto has reported a net profit of RM21.2 million for the fourth quarter ended April 30, 2025, which is a 76.51% drop from the RM90.2 million a year ago, making for its weakest quarterly earnings since the second quarter of the fiscal year 2022.

The Mazda and Kia distributor attributed the slump on the continuous influx of competitively-priced China-made vehicles into the Malaysian market, and said it expects the coming financial year in 2026 to be a challenging period, as The Edge reports.

“The continuous influx of Chinese marque vehicles had also impacted the sales of other marques in the country. The launching of new and/or new facelifts models of the group’s existing and new vehicle marques are still very much dependent on the market sentiments and economic conditions,” it said in its quarterly results filing.

It also warned that the local automotive sector is expected to register lower growth as inflati onary pressures, weaker global growth from geopolitical uncertainties and the outcomes of trade tariff negotiations are expected to impact the local economy.

Revenue dropped by 43.61% from RM937.53 million to RM528.65 million in Q4. The group’s net profit for the full fiscal year 2025 more than halved to RM155.91 million from RM345.58 million, as revenue shrank nearly 30% from RM3.9 billion to RM2.62 billion as a result of lower sales of Mazda and Kia vehicles.

Last year, the company had indicated that it was looking at making Kia its volume brand, with Mazda to go upmarket to a more premium segment with its newer models. The company also handles Xpeng, and has secured distribution rights for Deepal, which will be the second electric vehicle brand in its portfolio

All existing brands need to slash their prices to stay competitive. For too long now we customers have been shafted with your high profit margins. If the Chinese can offer full spec vehicles at those kind of price points then I don’t see why can’t you do the same.

    • Because Chainis cars are heavily subsidised and have razor thin margins, it’s not a sustainable business plan.

  • Have they looked at themselves in the mirror? The CX-5 360º camera resolution and the SMALL TV infotainment screen are simply unacceptable, even the latest refresh from 2024.

Kia? Volume brand? What a joke. Bermaz put in lots of effort to price and spec them as buyer repellants. Mazda vehicles are also being priced out of the mainstream as premium-wannabes.

  • There are some quick steps to save your sales figures Bermaz. 1) Upgrade all CX-5 models with 8 inch LCD display + 10 speaker Bose system. 2) Give 10 speaker Bose System to all CX-30 models + free tint & DVR. I can bet your sales will increase in two months. Your pricing strategy of the new CX-60 and Mazda 3 1.5 is in the right direction, bring them in already. For Kia Sportage, the 5 empty buttons for ventilated seats really put a lot of buyers off. You either design a new panel or just add back the function.

Totally spot on, initially I plan to buy a kia sportage. If they have HEV or ventilated seat for AWD, please take my money. Now I’m looking at CRV (space and eHEV) and other more competitive brand.

    • When I first saw the Kia Sportage in Korea, I fell in love with it. Then news came that Bermaz is finally bringing it in. But when they eventually launched the Sportage here, it was such disappointment. I felt like they are undercut the car here. Spot on with the 5 empty buttons. Not to mention, they absence of ventilated seat, panoramic sunroof, and delaying the hybrid model until God-knows-when! The price also put the buyer off! Sorry, I just given my money to Tesla Model Y Juniper!

You have only yourself to blame. Mazdas overseas are decently competitive but you are too incompetent to even breathe

they can keep blaming the Chinese competitors but Toyota and Honda keep having record sales. while price is a major factor, i think the Chinese competitors have pushed Toyota and Honda to fully equip their cars (for the most part) across the board while Mazda’s portfolio is inconsistent. for example, the almost 2 year late cx-5 facelift (their most popular car on sale). didn’t even bother updating the infotainment system + screen and then they wanna cry foul. again, the Chinese cars do bring some competition but Bermaz really doesn’t bring an attractive offer to the table so why would people choose a Mazda over a Chinese equivalent/Honda/Toyota.

For many years, many people have been burdened by the ruthless price you set for your vehicle.

You cannot match the CPC’s production cost, and their technological features are also more enticing.

  • Ya I understand its very sad, but I feel like the Top People in Bermaz deserve it. This is what happens when they choose to bring the prices up especially on the NEWER Mazda Models.

It’s the price vs specs. Honda and Toyota still ok due to their price but not much spec. Mazda however have neither good price nor spec. Kia has good spec but not good price.
Ride the new wave or get left behind.

  • It’s sad to see that Bermaz who seem to be on the right path are doing a stellar job of sabotaging themselves by being consistently under-specing their machines , not getting the latest products at the right time and waiting for an eternity , by not updating their bread & butter models to latest specs like international markets. I almost booked a CX8, great car to drive ,but the decade old infotainment, terrible 360 camera and the uninspiring audio on a 200k + car didn’t made sense to me in this age . Why can’t you keep your models refreshed , bringing the latest models with out underspecing them ? Customers will pay you higher money but not if you keep models like 2015.

You’re selling outdated cars but pricing them expensively. In a world where technology has no limits, don’t assume we’re not well-informed. If you guys continue with this bad strategy, it’s pretty certain that Bermaz will eventually go under. Your current senior management definitely needs to be replaced.

  • try 20% discount on all ranges during merdeka sales. no point if you bring in new models but still price way too high.

this is Malaysia. many dxxkheads will say “try upgrade your LCD, try add more speakers, try give free 3M tint”, etc etc… but still only discounted price will make these dxxkheads buy.
