Xpeng G7 EV SUV – longer than G6, LiDAR-less Level 3 autonomous, 3 Turing AI chips, up to 702 km CLTC

This is the new Xpeng G7 EV SUV, a longer-than-G6 Tesla Model Y– and Zeekr 7X-fighter that’s just opened for pre-sale in China from 235,800 yuan (RM139k), as reported by Car News China, which also posted these photos.

Measuring 4,892 mm long (+139 mm over G6), 1,925 mm wide (+5) and 1,655 mm tall (+5), with a 2,890 mm wheelbase (same as G6), the G7 has Level 3 autonomous driving (which Xpeng calls XNGP, or eXtreme Navigation Guided Pilot) that’s fully camera-based – no LiDAR.

There are Max and Ultra variants – the XNGP on the top Ultra is powered by three Turing AI chips (over 2,200 TOPS of computing power, equal to nine Nvidia Orin-X chips, Xpeng claims), making navigation-guided autonomous driving in the city and highway, as well as advanced parking aids, possible.

There’s also an AR-HUD system developed together with Huawei – this involves an 87-inch display field that supports AR navigation, complex intersection guidance, and dynamic lane change prompts using stabilisation, distortion correction, and latency compensation algorithms. A techie’s wet dream? You bet.

On to the more universally-understood bits – the G7’s rear-mounted 296 PS electric motor is fed either by a 68.5 kWh battery (602 km range if 18-inch wheels, 577 km if 20s) or a 80.8 kWh battery (702 km if 18s, 677 km if 20s). All ranges are CLTC. The recently-unveiled G6 facelift has the same battery choices and motor.

And like the G6 facelift, the G7 has a Model Y Juniper-like full-width front light bar, although here it appears to be a three-piece affair like the Tesla’s, instead of the G6 facelift’s one uninterrupted piece. Below this are the headlamps, which sit within cut-outs. The lower intake can open for cooling or close for aerodynamics. Also on are frameless soft-close doors, flush door handles and a trapezoidal full-width tail lamp. There’s a frunk, too.

The interior is minimalist as you’d expect. There’s only one 15.6-inch touch-screen, and all the pre-requisites are there – twin wireless phone charging pad, Nappa leather seats with ventilation, heating and massage, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting (with 256 colours!), 20 speakers and a digital rear-view mirror.

Interestingly, it’s got an eight-inch rear-air-con control screen and a fold-out table with a magnetic tablet holder at the back of the front passenger seat. What do you think? Want this for Malaysia?
