KLIA aerotrain resumes service – faster train sets, travel times between terminals now under 3 minutes

The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) aerotrain service has resumed this week, following a RM456 million upgrade exercise as part of a RM742 million transformation initiative by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), reported Bernama.

The aerotrain service between the main terminal and satellite terminal at KLIA now employs Alstom Innovia APM 300R train sets. Each train set is a three-car unit, which can accommodate up to 270 passengers at once and travel at up to 56 km/h, which reduces the travel time between terminals to under three minutes, according to the report.

Outfitted with advanced condition monitoring systems, the new trains are are designed to minimise service disruptions, enhance operational efficiency and improve passenger comfort, reported Bernama.

The upgraded train system has undergone six months of rigorous testing and commissioning by the land public transport agency (APAD) from January to June this year, according to MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani. KLIA Terminal 1 currently records over 100,000 passenger movements daily, according to the report.

The aerotrain finally resumes service after it was suspended in March 2023 as a precautionary measure following a major breakdown, after which it was expected to re-enter service in January. That was then pushed to June, before final confirmation that the service will be reinstated on July 1.
