Range Rover Electric preliminary details – 118 kWh battery, up to 483 km EV range, dual-motor 542 hp

The Range Rover Electric will be the brand’s second electric vehicle (EV) after the I-Pace and is expected to make its debut later this year. Before that, media outlets in the United Kingdom such as Autocar and Evo were given the chance to try out the luxurious, zero-emission, off-road-capable SUV, providing us with some valuable information.

Starting with what is already known, the Range Rover Electric will be built on the same Modular Longitudinal Architecture-Flex (MLA-Flex) platform as the regular, non-EV Range Rover. Additionally, it will not replace any other variant in the model range and will instead be another option sold alongside the existing petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid derivatives.

As for the battery, the reports indicate a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) pack with 118 kWh of usable capacity for an estimated range of up to 483 km (300 miles). Power from the battery is sent to two electric motors – one on each axle – that provide a total system output of 542 hp and 850 Nm of torque. These figures aren’t too far off P530 powertrain with a BMW-sourced 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine making 523 hp and 750 Nm.

The battery is mounted in the vehicle floor to keep the mass low down, which negates the need for active anti-roll bars to manage the targeted kerb weight of 2,800 kg. Evo reports that fixed roll bars are used that enable the required levels of wheel articulation when off-roading. The EV will also feature dual-chamber air springs and adaptive dampers.

Meanwhile, Autocar says the Range Rover Electric will have a slightly reduced ground clearance compared to a standard Range Rover at 260 mm (-30 mm), while its breakover angle is just 23 degrees (-4 degrees). Other stats such as wading depth (900 mm), ‘drive through’ climbing capacity (45 degrees) are unchanged.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is also said to offer the EV in standard- and long-wheelbase versions, although there will not be an option for seven seats due to the electric drive system taking up the space under the boot.
