According to a report by The Edge, the government is considering making MyDigital ID registration mandatory due to low uptake. Federal Territories minister Datuk Seri Zaliha Mustafa told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (July 21, 2025) that only 2.8 million Malaysians have registered for the national digital identity platform at the end of June this year.
Zaliha was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran), who raised concerns over public confidence over the function of MyDigital ID. This is following a recent disruption at the Johor Johor customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) complex over the weekend.
She noted that the government is looking at the possibility of formulating a specific Act that encourages or makes it compulsory for Malaysians to register for MyDigital ID, which has its own smartphone app. Other official government apps include MySejahtera, the Pangkalan Data Utama (PADU) socio-economic database, MyJPJ, HRMIS Mobile, MyBorderPass, and soon, MyGov Malaysia.
MyDigital ID was developed in 2016 as a national digital identification system aimed at providing secure, authenticated identity verification for online transactions across both public and private sectors. Zaliha reiterated in the Dewan Rakyat that the platform uses biometric, e-KYC (electronic know-your-customer), and cryptographic technologies, and does not store users’ personal data as part safety initiatives.
She also pointed out that MyDigital ID has been integrated with 82 digital systems as of July, including 35 fully operational government platforms while 17 are in various stages of implementation and 21 are under discussion. On the private sector front, seven non-government systems have been integrated with the platform, with two more in progress.
Additionally, six local banks have successfully completed sandbox testing under the supervision of Bank Negara Malaysia, signalling “the financial sector’s confidence in adopting secure digital identification solutions”.
