Xpeng is making its debut at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2025, and the Chinese EV start-up is coming in with big plans, from the start. There’s an X9 on stage, and the distinctive luxury electric MPV stands out even more with a ‘X 1 CKD’ number plate.
Yes, the X9 is CKD locally assembled here in Indonesia, at PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM) in Purwakarta, West Jawa. Local production started on July 1, and this white X9 is the first of a planned 800 units a month, or a total of 9,600 units per year. This is a big deal for Xpeng, which is having overseas production for the first time.
“Excited to officially announce Xpeng’s first global production base in Indonesia. Today marks a historic milestone as we deliver the first locally produced Xpeng X9 to Indonesian customers!” Xiaopeng He, CEO and chairman of Xpeng said on X yesterday.
“From becoming the sales champion among Chinese NEV startups in multiple markets, to surpassing 800,000 global deliveries, and now achieving localised production in Indonesia, our global strategy is advancing step by step, with unstoppable momentum.
“Indonesia is Southeast Asia’s largest NEV market and holds ambitious plans to build a local smart EV supply chain. We deeply appreciate the trust of Indonesian customers and partners. Together with local talents, we will bring cutting-edge intelligent technology to Indonesia. Advancing Intelligence, Adventure Indonesia!” he added.
The CKD Xpeng X9 is the latest facelifted version that we detailed for you from Hong Kong in April. Looks-wise, little has changed. There is an extra decorative bar in each front bumper side cutout and lighted-up ‘XPENG‘ lettering above the rear LED strip. The Chinese-market car has new alloys (still 20s) with multi spokes and Rolls-Royce-style self-levelling hub badges.
Xpeng’s Turing AI-powered ADAS is now standard across the range. Inside, the fridge door is now wrapped in soft-touch material Retained are niceties such as the power-folding third row, rear-wheel steering and dual-chamber air springs, but there’s now an AI-optimised 6D comfortable anti-motion sickness algorithm to minimise body roll and pitch. NVH has been enhanced as well.
There are two types of middle row captain chairs – the slimmer ‘aviation’ seats have room in the middle for third row passengers to walk through, while the top-spec ‘zero-gravity’ seats with their wider armrests take up the full width of the car.
China gets four variants – Long Range Max (650 km range, RMB359,800 or RM212,347), Ultra Long Range Max (740 km range, RMB379,800 or RM224,154), AWD Performance Max (702 km range, RMB399,800 or RM235,958) and the Starship Edition (702 km range, RMB419,800 or RM247,762). All ranges quoted are on the more lenient CLTC. Battery choices for the 800V vehicle are 105 kWh NMC or 94.8 kWh LFP.
In Indonesia, there are three variants – the Standard Range (84.5 kWh LFP, 500 km WLTP), Long Range Pro (101.5 kWh NCM, 590 km WLTP) and the Long Range Pro Plus. Prices range from Rp 990 juta (RM256,701) to Rp 1.099 juta (RM284,965). In Malaysia, the pre-update X9 – launched in March – is priced from RM270,708 to RM300,708 on-the-road before insurance. Full details in our launch report.
Here’s a fun fact for you. HIM handles CKD production for a long list of Chinese brands, including the likes of Chery, Neta, Geely, BAIC, Jetour and Jaecoo. Recent ‘national cars’ based on Chinese models such as the Aletra L8 (Geely Jiaji/Livan 8) and Polytron G3 (Skyworth EV6) are also clients. HIM has two factories – one in Pondok Ungu, Bekasi and a newer one in Purwakarta, West Jawa.
