Genting Highlands road charge must consider the needs of those using the route daily – Pahang exco

Following the announcement made last week by Genting Malaysia that it will soon impose charges on vehicles entering Jalan Genting Highlands at a date to be announced, the Pahang government says that it hopes that these charges will take into account the interests and welfare of local residents.

The state’s public works, transport and health committee chairman Datuk Razali Kassim said special consideration should be given to parents taking their children to school and residents who travel through the area daily, as Bernama reports.

Earlier, Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman had indicated the same, saying that the company should consider providing special toll exemptions or discounts for local residents, employees, and families with children attending schools in Genting.

In its announcement, Genting Malaysia said the move to impose a private road charge was necessary due to the steep and escalating costs of maintaining the 24 km-long private road and its slopes, which it said has been borne solely by the company since the 1960s.

Heavy usage of Jalan Genting Highlands has resulted in a “tremendous amount of wear and tear”, and requires constant maintenance to ensure the safety of the road users, the company said.
