Geely Starray EM-i – Proton eMas 7 PHEV twin sets production plug-in hybrid SUV FC record; 3.83 l/100km

The Geely EX5 EM-i, known as the Geely Starray EM-i in Australia has set a Guinness world record for the lowest fuel consumption by a production plug-in hybrid SUV through its journey on a coastal drive from Sydney to Melbourne in Australia, the manufacturer has announced.

The Starray EM-i attained a fuel consumption figure of 3.83 litres per 100 km – equivalent to 26.1 km per litre – on its 1,056 km journey. For comparison, its claimed fuel consumption is 2.4 litres of fuel per 100 km on the WLTP testing standard; claimed energy consumption through its electric powertrain is 14.7 kWh per 100 km.

Geely says that the route, covering a mixture of coastal plains, undulating terrain and urban congestion, was chosen specifically to reflect “real-world and sophisticated driving scenarios”, rather than a closed-road test.

The Geely Starray EM-i has a Malaysian twin in the Proton eMas 7 PHEV which was previewed earlier this month, and like the Geely equivalent for global markets, the plug-in hybrid Proton-branded SUV gets a 1.5 litre petrol engine producing 99 PS/215 Nm paired with a 218 PS/262 Nm front axle electric motor, with the ICE unit slightly less powerful than the 111 PS/136 Nm setup for the Chinese market.

Thus equipped the Starray EM-i does the 0-100 km/h acceleration benchmark in eight seconds, and the electric motor is fed by a 18.4 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery which is slightly lower in capacity compared to the 19.09 kWh unit of the Chinese-market Geely Starship 7.

The Australian-market Starray EM-i has a purely electric range is rated at 84 km (WLTP), and a claimed overall range of 943 km (WLTP). It can take up to 6 kW AC, and up to 30 kW DC charging, while conversely it can provide up to 6 kW in V2L or V2V applications.

In Malaysia, the Proton eMas 7 PHEV is expected to be priced in the region of RM130k to RM140k, as selected owners of the Proton X50 were asked in a survey if they would consider the eMas 7 PHEV if it was priced around RM20-30k more than the B-segment ICE-powered SUV.
