Audi Sport now offering Audi R8 GT3 race car

Audi is really intruding into its owner Porsche’s territory now. Audi Sport is now offering a race-prepared Audi R8 that complies with GT3 race regulations. Because GT3 prohibits all-wheel drive, the Audi R8 GT3 drives the rear wheels only through a newly developed 6-speed sequential gearbox.

The suspension bits are almost a carryover from the available production line parts. The front end is modified for more downforce and on the rear you will find a huge rear wing.

First deliveries will begin in Autumn 2008. Look after the jump for 3 more photos.

Wow, truly something especial. Didn’t R8 can look so cool. I say they should make a road going version of it. Definately will kick ass (perhaps Porsche’s GT3)?

If stock, V8, means this car will not catch fire like the V10 then. Nice idea, but stock looks better than some race car

I think GT3-spec cars are much closer to the road going version (although can be more powerful), if compared to GT2-spec cars. GT2 cars possibly have the upper edge on the suspension & electronics. Somemore, the competitors in FIA GT3 are mostly semi, or non-profesional drivers. The running cost for GT3 is also cheaper than GT2.

One thing I noticed, grid size & marques variety in FIA GT3 Champ (GT3 cars) is way more diverse than the FIA GT Champ (GT1 & GT2 cars), creating rumours to replace GT2 regs. with GT3 regs. Most of the time you’ll only see Ferarri vs Porsche in GT2, which suffice to say damn boring. Try check out fiagt3 website.

Shame all-wheel drive is outlawed, would also love to see Nissan GT-R..

The car certainly looks the bussiness.Wonder how the Audi R8 GT3 will fare against its sibling Lambo Gallardo GT3?

BMW M6 is also expected to make appearance next year (built by Alpina). Should be great for the already sizeable FIA GT3 grid.

The Lambo Gallardo GT3 is built by third party tuner Reiter Engineering, while
the Audi R8 GT3 is entirely in-house factory built.
