The Ford Mondeo is now officially here in Malaysia, a CBU import directly from its production center in the land of fine chocolates, Belgium. There is only one model variant available for RM178,888 (OTR with insurance) and the following are the specifications:

  • 2.3 litre Duratec HE 161 PS at 6,500rpm, 208Nm at 4,200rpm
  • 6-speed automatic with manual shift control
  • 7 airbags including driver knee airbag
  • 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat
  • 5-Star Euro NCAP crash test rating
  • Steering wheel audio and cruise control
  • Ford EasyFuel – capless refuelling system
  • ABS brakes with EBD
  • Two ISOFIX mount points for the rear seats
  • 60:40 foldable rear seats to extend boot space
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • 3 year or 100,000km warranty

The Mondeo has a nice black interior with silver accents and red backlighting. The interior looks decidedly ‘younger’ than most of its rivals, it makes no attempt to drown you with wood or anything.

Note that in some of the photos after the jump you’ll see a big colour LCD in the instrumentation panel. Our Malaysian spec has a regular red and white multi-info LCD. The head-unit is an integrated 6-CD unit from Sony with MP3 capabilities. The gear lever uses the “proper” push to downshift and pull to upshift configuration for the manual shift controls.

The construction of the body also uses a technique called laser hotwire brazing, which Ford claims is a ‘first in segment’ application. This allows for a cleaner and seam-free method of joining the side and roof panels together. You can see the result in the photo above. There is no big gap between the area where the roof joins the side. Look at most cars and you’ll see a hollow channel there with rubber or plastic trim covering it.

This picture shows two things – first, the EasyFill fuel filler which does not require a fuel cap, first introduced in the production Ford GT. The filler fits snugly around the nozzle to prevent fumes from escaping while the car is being refilled, and since there is no fuel cap it eliminates the problem of drivers driving off without putting the cap back on.

The other thing is the fuel label – the Duratec HE engine in this Mondeo can take RON95. The engine’s torque output of 208Nm is on the low side for a modern engine – I would expect at least 220Nm from a 2.3 litre engine these days. The Duratec HE engine is similiar to the one in the Escape but does not have variable valve timing, but has a variable intake manifold.

Nevertheless, many European mags are raving about this new Mondeo and some are even saying it beats the E90 when it comes to its drive. I am very very curious to find out if this is really the case. But in general European Ford cars have a reputation of great handling and drive feel as with the Focus that is already sold here. Ford plans to sell between 200 to 300 Mondeos a year in Malaysia.

Speaking of the Focus, a turbodiesel Focus TDCi with PowerShift twin clutch is due on our local shores in 2010. The Thai market already has this car. Also in store for us is the Ford S-Max and the Ford Fiesta – Ford seems to be really on a roll now, shifting its focus from a predominantly truck brand into a passenger car brand.

Look after the jump for more shots of the Mondeo.

F10 BMW 5-Series Sedan: more beauty footage videos and a set of live photos!

f10-world-premiere-1

I’m back with some live photos of the BMW 5-Series Sedan at its world premiere in Munich, or should I say the mothership of BMW.

f10-spyshot

I didn’t get to see it actually on the road (except for this one that’s still taped up) as production will only officially begin early 2010 but I must say the actual car in the metal is a little different from the photos.

bmw-f10-rer

Not to say that it looks completely different, but different details tend to show up in the photos, and our eyes focus on the details. In real life, we tend to look at the whole car as a whole and see the little details blending in together. And then I realised that BMW was back to the E46-E39-E38 same sausage different length kind of design language. The new 5 properly looks like the middle child between the E90 LCI and the F01, but there are still some individual touches to talk about. But the new car range is far from the design differentiation that the E60-E90-E65 had.

f10-sode

The most dominant detail of the side view in real life is the character line that runs across the door handles. It is very very prominent and casts a stronger shadow below it than anything else on the car. The other character line that runs below the doors and rises up towards the boot kinda disappears because of that. The car also looks less droopy. The F07 5-Series GT’s side gets a completely different treatment with some additional character lines on bottom half of the doors (click link to see what I mean) – those is sorely missed on this F10 5 Sedan!

f10-world-premiere-2

The new F10 is definitely better looking than the E60. Strangely it also looks smaller than the E60. This is not really something you can observe in photos but its apparent in real life. In metal for some reason it looks more like what one would expect from a 3-Series one or two generations to come. It truly would not be surprising looking at how every generation of car has been growing larger and larger.

f10-world-premiere-3

Despite looking smaller, in reality the new F10 5-Series is in fact the biggest 5 ever, with the longest wheelbase in its class. It is about 6cm longer than the E60 in terms of body length but the wheelbase has gone up by 8cm, which means the overhangs are actually shorter on this car. That could be one reason why the car looks more compact, but the styling plays another factor. The front end looks sharper while the side profile is less slab-looking because of the character line.

f10-jacek-frohlich
The man who actually designed the new F10 – Jacek Frohlich

I’m not sure if this will go completely well with the Malaysian customer who actually has the money to buy the 5. Take a look at Honda. They’ve split the Accord line into two for a few generations already, with our market getting the fatter and larger version (as with the US market) because we like our cars big, as more metal for each ringgit feels like we’re getting more value for money. In Europe, a slimmer and sleeker Accord that’s more like a sports car is offered.

f10-world-premiere-4

Making the new 5-Series look slimmer and sportier more like a large 3 rather than a small 7 should work very well in Europe where the average age of the 5 buyer is lower than the 5 buyer in Malaysia. In Malaysia, the equivalent of the European 7 buyer buys a 5 here, and a 7 buyer here has the mentality and social status of one that buys something a segment higher in Europe, perhaps a Ghost. It’s all because of the ringgit’s lower spending power combined with the ridiculous amount of money we pay for our cars here.

There will probably be a few brand-neutral folks who will go for the W212 over the F10 simply because the W212 looks more “grand”. The 5′s saving grace is that it is still a 5 (and not a 3, a status thing) and it is in fact larger than it looks.

Look after the jump for live photos and two videos of the 535i and the 530d along with some video demonstrations on how the various new technologies work inserted at the end of the 530d video.

AMG could produce diesel performance engines

Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division is considering to use different types of fuel in the future to power its high performance cars, according to WHATCAR that is. This is further fueled by the recent confirmation that the company will build an electric-powered SLS AMG that can output up to 526hp and 880Nm of torque.

When asked about developing and using high performance diesel engines, AMG’s product manager Oliver Wiech said, “We are taking an open view and looking at lots of options, but if you look at our announcement on the electric SLS, you can see what is in the future.”

Recent diesel engines are very efficient and they can also offer bags of power, especially since they can produce very high torque. For example, BMW’s 530d is able to generate 245hp and a 540Nm of torque from its 3.0 litre 6-cylinder powerplant.

BMW Sauber F1 sold to Peter Sauber, deal with Qadbak cancelled

BMW has officially announced that it has sold its Formula 1 team back to Peter Sauber and that the deal with Qadbak will not proceed further. This is good news as there should not be any reason for the FIA and other teams not to give Sauber the green light to race in 2010.

“We are very happy with this solution. This fulfils the most important requirement for a successful future for the team. Our relationship with Peter Sauber has always been excellent and marked by absolute respect. We would like to express our thanks to Peter Sauber and the whole team for the excellent cooperation during the recent four years,” said Dr Klaus Draeger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG.

Peter Sauber added, “I am very relieved that we have found this solution, it means we can keep the Hinwil location and the majority of workplaces. I am convinced that the new team has a very good future in Formula 1 whose current transformation with new framework conditions will benefit the private teams.” A further agreement with Peter Sauber proposes personnel cuts from the current level of 388 to around 250 employees.

There should be a total of 13 teams now, meaning 26 cars on the grid so it should be an exciting season. Furthermore with the team returning back to Peter Sauber, Petronas is likely to maintain its position as a sponsor, probably becoming the title sponsor again.

US company rumored to buy over Sauber?

The latest rumor in the Formula 1 paddock is the possible take over of the Sauber Formula 1 outfit by an unnamed American company. Apparently the buyout by Qadbak following BMW’s withdrawal has backfired. According to some reports, the man behind Qadbak’s move is Russell King, a convicted con-man.

The take over was also poorly funded which is why the FIA and other Formula 1 teams are very reluctant in giving the team the green light to race in 2010, even when Toyota has left an empty seat after its departure.

According to Auto Motor and Sport, there is an unnamed American company that is likely to make a move for a take over. Although unnamed, it claims that the company in question is known and would be very much welcomed into the sport by Formula 1′s “godfather” Bernie Ecclestone. Sauber would become the thirteenth team for next season if everything goes well.

Kia Cadenza/K7′s long but awesome TVC

Before I move on further, I must admit that Kia has definitely upped its ante recently with some impressive looking vehicles such as the Kia Forte and this, the Cadenza “luxury sports sedan” which is known as the K7 back in Korea.

Along with the recent reveal, the automaker has a released a pretty cool commercial video of the new Kia. If you think the Cadenza / K7 is good looking in photos, wait till you watch this video! Its quite long, 3 minutes and 38 seconds to be precise, but rather entertaining as it looks more of a short film with some chase scenes rather than a commercial.

The video showcases some features on the Cadenza / K7 including a welcome note on the instrument panel, a lane departure warning system, a reverse camera system with guide lines, heated steering, a floor-mounted accelerator pedal and more. I really hope it drives as well as it looks! Anyway, I shall let the video do all the talking.

Other possible options for Saab

As previously reported Saab will not be owned by Koenigsegg at least for now and Saab, or should I say General Motors is left with a few options. The most talked about option is the ‘death’ of the Saab brand. General Motors previously said that if Saab is not sold by end of the year, the auto giant will bury it. Other possible options include the take over by other companies that are interested and when it comes to this, many are pointing towards Chinese companies that are on a take over frenzy.

Geely is very close in sealing the deal with Volvo and there is possibility that it may extend its interest to Saab. We should not discount other companies like Dongfeng, BAIC, Fiat, Merbanco (US-based merchant bank) and so on. One thing is for sure, who ever is interested to take over Saab has to part with a lot, and I mean a lot of money. One would have buy it from General Motors and then spend a hefty sum and not to mention a lot of time bringing the brand back into profitability.

The Swedish government is unlikely to make a bid because it recently revealed that it has no interest in owning Volvo or Saab, however it has promised to provide up to US$ 3 billion in loan guarantees. There is also a possibility that General Motors will eventually keep the brand, just like what it did with Opel. The reason behind that was the improved business environment in Europe, according to General Motors that is.

This is what General Motors’ president and CEO Fritz Henderson said when they decided to keep Opel, “While strained, the business environment in Europe has improved. At the same time, GM’s overall financial health and stability have improved significantly over the past few months, giving us confidence that the European business can be successfully restructured.”

Lexus LFA for lease in US and Canada

The 552hp Lexus LFA supercar will be available in North America on a lease basis for at least two years, after which, you can choose to purchase the car. Out of 500 units planned, about 140 are expected to be available in the US and 10 for the Canadian market. This is to prevent the cars from not being driven until they carry more value and subsequently sold. It also to avoid speculators from purchasing the car and selling it immediately for a huge profit.

Mitsubishi Triton 2.5 Standard: more details revealed!

Mitsubishi has launched the Triton 2.5 Standard earlier today and we now have more information to share with you concerning the new variant that sits between the Triton Lite and the Triton 2.5. Compared to the latter, the exterior of the Standard lacks the side steps, sports bar and front fog lamps.

Inside, the steering wheel, gear knob and the hand brake lever are all finished in urethane while the audio unit does not have Bluetooth or USB connectivity but has MP3 and WMA playback. The 2.5 Standard also does not come with any airbags unfortunately. Last but not least, as seen in the image above, the Triton 2.5 Standard has its wheel arches in grey, instead of body colour. It has a 136 PS 2.5 litre turbodiesel mated to a manual transmission and has a 4X4 configuration.
