No Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution XI? Quite likely, it seems

Well, it looks like the Lancer Evolution is heading into the history books, at least in its current petrol-based form. Seems Mitsubishi is dropping very broad hints that the Evo X will be the last of its ilk as it prepares for that bold leap towards the electric front.

Mitsubishi says it is considering a different direction for its all-wheel-drive, high-performance sedan, even if a go-fast vehicle is expected to remain very much part of its general programme. Of course, the fire-breathing Mitsu of the future could very well be an electric or a hybrid vehicle.

The company is preparing to launch no less than eight EV or plug-in hybrids worldwide by 2015, and that direction is set to become the main core focus, which leaves very little space for the good old fossil burner, hot and halo as it may be.

No Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution XI? Quite likely, it seems

The change in perspective is also aided partly by redefined market needs and demands, not to mention having to meet tougher fuel economy and emissions regulations across the planet. The Evo X will continue to soldier on through 2013, but a gas-gulping XI looks to be out of the question.

As the company puts it in a statement, “MMC has kept the Lancer Evolution sedan evolving as the brand’s highest performing model in the global market. However, as the market’s needs and demands change, MMC is considering not advancing the Lancer Evolution concept in the same way as before, but to find a different direction for the Lancer Evolution model to evolve. The new direction, the technologies involved, and corresponding products will be disclosed in due course.”

I believe Mitsu, finally, does not have the heart in making cars anymore…
They have banks, heavy industries, chemical plants, etc. They built war jets and oil tankers – this is where the money is!!!
Maybe they have a lot of idling engineers before, and therefore they decided to built cars…
or… maybe, like any other GLC (jii el see – not gliche!) they have orders from “you-know-who”…
      letih!!!

        bro…

eventhough they bear the Mitsubishi name, each company is not related… each Mitsubishi company has its own Board of directors… they are not related to each other, but holding the same philosophy….

Mitsubishi Motor is not under same company with Mitsubishi heavy industries…

they form a business joint as a zaibatsu….

Maybe Mitsubishi can develop a Lancer Evolution EV version, less fuel consumption, better environmental responsibility (with turbo charger).

Anthony, i believe this news is fake. Do go to their facebook page and check it out.

    Mitsubishi twitted this:

Production of the current Lancer Evolution continues as planned.
As for its successor, regulations and market feedback will dictate its engineering package & architecture.

MMC has kept the Lancer Evolution sedan evolving as the brand’s highest performing model in the global market. However, as the market’s needs and demands change, MMC is considering not advancing the Lancer Evolution concept in the same way as before, but to find a different direction for the Lancer Evolution model to evolve. The new direction, the technologies involved, and corresponding products will be disclosed in due course.

i second you on this! my interpretation of MMC statement is i believe that the EVO will head for different direction, not with big turbo and fuel gulping beast anymore, but still will be their top end performance and halo model

      don^don,

The current X is set to go on through well into 2013. It’s what happens after this where the interest is. Shinichi Kurihara, Mitsubishi Motors North America’ s CEO, recently said that the duality of being eco-friendly and having high performance is very important for the company.

He also alluded that a future Mitsubishi performance car could be a pure EV, though nothing is set in concrete for the future. The piece is speculatiion that something different is on the cards. Which it probably is, but it’s anyone guess what and how.

The market for Evos is quite hard actually considering the ever hiking petrol price and the limited numbers of Evo buyers.

I knew Evo to be an iconic race car since my primary school years. Listen MMC, the science is not yet finished, if you want to build EV make sure the torque delivered by MIVEC’s powertrain is as powerful as petrol, otherwise continue researching persistently.
