BRT Sunway Line electric bus service launched – 5.4 km-long, seven stations, links up KTM and LRT lines

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak has launched the Sunway Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service, which is known as the BRT Sunway Line. Initially set to run on June 9, the all-electric bus service will serve commuters based in Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya. It will ply a 5.4 km-long route, the Sunway Line, and cover a total of seven stations – two of which will integrate with the Setia Jaya KTM and upcoming USJ 7 Kelana Jaya LRT stations.

Seven stations will be built to improve accessibility in Setia Jaya, Mentari Business Park, Sunway Lagoon, Sunway Medical Centre, Monash University Malaysia and USJ7. Of the seven listed stops, the Sunway University-Monash station (or Station 5 on the route) will feature a Park ‘n’ Ride facility – users will be charged a flat rate of RM4.

A total of 1,153 parking bays includes 102 bays for female drivers, 23 for disabled commuters and 121 for motorcycle riders. The RM634 million project is expected to cater to an estimated catchment population of 500,000 with a daily projected load of 2,400 commuters per hour. The figure is set to rise to 5,200 by 2035.

It was announced at the launch that the BRT Sunway Line will be free to use for the first two months of operations, starting from today. “Later, if the commuters use our MyRapid card for the BRT service, they will enjoy a flat rate of RM4 per day,” said Prasarana Malaysia’s group MD Azmi Abdul Aziz.

The finalised rate for the BRT Sunway Line will be announced by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) before the end of August, according to Azmi. Additionally, The Sun understands that plans for the KL-Klang BRT Line, which is expected to begin construction by the end of 2016, are already in motion.

A fleet of 15 BYD-badged electric buses will be employed for use on the Sunway Line. Said buses will possess a top speed of 80 km/h and will come equipped with a plethora of amenities including WiFi connectivity. Each bus has a maximum capacity of 67 passengers – 25 of them seated. The bus is capable of an operational range of 250 km – a figure sufficient for 23 trips a day.

  • Wonder how much rapid KL will be charging for this route and how many people will be using this BRT. Most likely it will turns into white elephant.

I foresee it will be a great success, especially when KJ line extension is fully operational.

Why so negative? This is first project for BRT implementation in KV and I believe Subang folks will appreciate the service, it will be Free for two months starting today. Traffic in USJ area really bad during rush hour especially if it raining in the evening.

RM4 for day pass. Also it’s a joint venture where Sunway put up about RM100m of its own money to make the BRT happen.

Good to have more options but a few things don’t make sense.

        1) Funny for them to put the Park n’ Ride in the middle of the route. I suspenct would be used as parking mostly for Monash Staff and Students, or additional parking for Sunway Lagoon/Pyramid/convention centre. Not so much for commuters.

The more logical area would be the Setia Jaya stop, shared by KTM.

it’s funded by Sunway, and it won’t become a white elephant. the transit points of KTM Komuter and Kelana Jaya line is the highlight point, as well as sunway university and sunway pyramid stations.

I think this is a brilliant solution for the location and route served. I was kind of against it in the beginning due to the congestion and potholes the construction caused. I just hope that once everything is completed, the roads in the area will be fixed…(until some moron decides to dig up some hole for some dumb reason with no planning).

Now, I really hope all of that was worth it and this system will work.

      1. It creates connectivity to places that are not served by LRT/MRT/Komuter

      2. Cost of the “highway” is probably almost the same as LRT. Maybe cheaper because no rails needed and Sunway Group is using their own Sunway Construction.

      3. Maintenance of the road on the “highway” is probably lower because there is no rail, signaling, track changing etc.

4.If the bus is no good in the long run, can change to other buses. No need to stick to same coach builder for rail.

      5. If frequency not enough, can put more buses on it without reprogramming, planning etc. Just put more bus drivers and buses during high demand. Rail coaches will have a higher minimum capacity that may be of waste in lower traffic area such as in Sunway/Subang Jaya.

      6. There may be some point that it could be a white elephant as in the case of the monorail built by Sunway Group a long time ago. All is left of that now is the rail which has since been converted to a covered walk way. Then again, if you never try, you never know. Could have been many reasons why that failed but that is a different discussion. I hope this one works.

I support any incentives toward the continued development of Malaysian public transport. As far as I’m concerned, public transport is the most effective solution to our ever worsening daily traffic jams. I have grown up in Subang since 2004, and every year, traffic just kept getting worse… I understand that traffic jams are part of city life, but it’s impatient, incompetent and uncourteous drivers which really make me mad, not the jams themselves. This is especially the case at the highway in front of Sunway Pyramid; NOBODY drives properly here, anyone who uses this ‘gauntlet’ of a road will know. Building more roads and more highways will NEVER be enough, and increasing car taxes or implementing a quota on new car registrations like in Singapore and Shanghai is not going to help much at this point.

I hope to try this BRT soon, I’m happy that they’re using ELECTRIC buses and not some cancerous, dirty diesel buses like those in downtown KL. However, these China-made BYD buses better be as reliable as the Japanese and Euro buses we’ve had here, Malaysians want our taxpayer’s money well spent, quality over quantity should be practised at all times.

  • Well this project is actually to ferry people from the Kelana Jaya LRT to Sunway Pyramid as thats where all the ridership is from. However the Kelana Jaya LRT Extension project is at least one to two years from being ready due to the many delays.

So now the bus will only serve people from the KTMB Commuter station , the Setia Jaya station.

I wonder how many people will there be to take the busses because if one can drive to any of the stations along the alignment, we may as well drive straight to Sunway Pyramid.

It’ll be good if RapidKL develop similar BRT for Gombak area connecting Gombak LRT station, UIA, Sri Gombak, Greenwood, Batu Muda, KTM Batu Caves as these areas population grew up and congestion getting worse from day to day.

It won’t be white elephant if you are staying in Subang. It is very convenient for students during peak hours because of the jam. Try driving from pyramid back to Usj during peak hours, its only a short distance but I was stuck in the jam for 2 hours before….. -_-“

RM4 for a feeder bus? come on! make it RM2 per day to make it successful? it will payitself by volume. and what about commuter frequencies, should be 10minutes max. not 15 minutes or 1/2 hour.

by the way are there any people with brains in their heads at KTM , the Padang Besar – Gemas double track is ready and these guys cannot up come up with some ideas to go the full way to Singapore. I hope some bright management trainee comes up with the idea to run at at least a few fast ets from Butterworth to Gemas (5 hrs) and contract luxury express buses at Gemas station to Johor/Singapore while we wait for the next government to give the tender to build the gemas to JB line. Of course they should be smooth baggage transfer service to lighten the load. We could also have the Singapore immigration at Gemas so that no need to check at woodlands! LOL
