SPAD to investigate LRT brake failure incidents

LRT Kelana Jaya Line

Following the two brake failure incidents on the Kelana Jaya light rail transit (LRT) line on Wednesday, in which a train caught fire in one of them, the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) says it is setting up a special committee to investigate the issue, Bernama reports.

The commission’s chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said the committee will be composed of experts, including representatives from SPAD, and that investigations will be completed within two or three months.

“The report will contain the cause of the incident and proposed improvements, we will also get a report from Prasarana Malaysia Berhad to be combined with this report,” he told the news agency.

He said that if any elements of negligence or criminal activities were found, they will be forwarded to the Attorney-General for further action. “The trains have been checked periodically, in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that were set, it may also have occurred due to the weather. Therefore, we can not make early assumptions,” he stated.

Syed Hamid added that the commission will not compromise on the safety of passengers utilising public transport. “We view them as serious incidents, because they caused a fire, and could have been life-threatening to passengers,” he said.

On Wednesday, a four-car Gombak-bound train experienced brake failure at Setiawangsa station at 8.19 am, disrupting services for nearly half an hour. Hours later, the brakes on a second Gombak-bound train also failed near Universiti station, though the situation was far more serious as the train caught fire. Line operations were temporarily disrupted by the two incidents. Yesterday, the KJ line was also disrupted by signalling issues.

  • Brake failure is due to wear and tear that simple.

When wear and tear not taken care of, that means the preventive maintenance was not conducted according to the schedule.

    In this case, operator’s responsibility.
