In conjunction with National Day celebrations, a number of major roads in KL will be closed to traffic from today until Monday – The Star reports that eighteen routes around Dataran Merdeka will be affected by the closures, which will be closed from 6 am daily and reopened in stages by noon every day.

The closures around Dataran Merdeka are to facilitate preparations for the celebrations on August 31, city traffic police chief Asst Comm Mohd Nadzri Hussain said.

He said that only those who will be on duty on National Day will have access to Dataran Merdeka through Bulatan Dato Onn-Jalan Gereja so that they can park their vehicles in the underground parking lot. Around 7,000 people are expected to participate in the Merdeka celebrations.

He added that exceptions will be made for VVIPs, VIPs, ambassadors and those with an official invitation to attend the celebrations. Chartered buses, meanwhile, will be allowed to drop off and pick up participants near Dataran Merdeka, but drivers will be required to adhere to assigned routes and by a specific time.
