Volvo S90 and V90 Polestar to make 600 hp – report

Juicy details regarding a hotter version of the new Volvo S90 and V90 have emerged from Motor Trend – the Polestar models will reportedly pack a massive 600 hp, utilising an uprated version of the plug-in hybrid powertrain that drives the T8 Twin Engine models.

According to Volvo’s senior vice president of research and development Dr Peter Mertens, the 2.0 litre Drive-E four-cylinder petrol engine can be boosted to almost 450 hp through the use of a supercharger and twin electric turbochargers.

T6 AWD with Polestar Performance Optimisation

This is quite a step up from the mill in the Twin Engine (and in the T6 models, minus the hybrid gubbins), which makes 320 hp using a supercharger and a turbocharger. Elsewhere, Volvo will also substitute the Twin Engine’s 87 hp rear-mounted electric motor for a more powerful unit.

All-in-all, the 600 hp output is around 200 hp higher than the T8 Twin Engine’s 407 horses, and should put it in good stead for the S90 and V90 Polestar to compete with the most powerful sports sedans and wagons in its class, including the upcoming F90 BMW M5 and W213 Mercedes-AMG E 63.

Volvo doesn’t need to even surpass the M5, RS6 or E63 on all aspects. Just having enough power and driving dynamics to tailgate the German trio around the ring says a lot to the world.

  • More power to the people – choice wise. Albeit for the richer ones only. Much richer ones. Ha ha. In any case it’s good to see a newbie shake up the largely all-German status quo. Go Volvo.
