Audi A8 4.0 V8 TDI excellent fuel economy

audia8video.jpg

Jeremy Clarkson learns how to drive slowly in an Audi A8 powered by a 4.0 litre V8 turbodiesel engine.

He puts the car through the challenge of going from London to Edinburgh and back to London again on a single fuel tank of 72 litres (19 gallons). That’s 1287km (800 miles). And he manages to do it. That’s RM92 for 1297km of mileage.

A little performance stats – this Audi A8 is a generation older than the current version and it’s 4.0 TDI twin turbo V8 engine makes 275hp at 3750rpm and 650Nm of torque between 1800 and 2500rpm in classic diesel style. It can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.7 seconds.

    Paul,

I've been drooling over european diesel engined cars for quite some time now…. Looking forward to the VW Fox and Fiat Punto Grande; both using diesel engines that are less than 1500cc but able to provide fantastic BHP and torque at earlier RPMs (normally around 2,000RPM)

All the above without adding to crazy fuel consumption!

Remember the Isuzu DMAX challenge going around Malaysia a couple of months back – >1440km on one single tank of diesel (around 70+ litres)

but road tax so expensive. 6x the normal gasoline engine roadtax. and it's a 4 liter car, imagine, 3 year road tax probably can buy myvi already.

Of course we are not going to have 4.0 TDI in malaysia here, i am looking forward to a Golf TDI or any small cc diesel car in malaysia, i am willing to pay a slightly extra for it. The FC and low rpm torque is simply cool.

Yeah, I also think it was 2 years ago…..

But imagine, driving without the radio, without the air-condition, can't wind down the window just to minimize the use of eletricity. Who can do that? And it's sure amuse me to see Jeremy is driving without goin with word, "powerrrrr". Hehehe.

Btw, Paul, don't you wanna post the final result of the attemp to kill the HiLux? You missed part two. To think what Jeremy did was overrated, you should check out at what James May did as the final attempt! =)

Used to have an A4 – Diesel. Half the engine, half the power, half the torque and almost same weight as A8. Despite of that: I once reached 240 km/h on the meter, acceleration was real fun and the best mileage I got was a little more than 19 km/liter.

Isn't that the current version of the A8? I should be completely wrong if it isn't
