Chevrolet Certified Used Car programme to start here

GM South East Asia is planning to introduce a programme called Chevrolet Certified Used Car in Malaysia, as part of its plans to help elevate the used car value of Chevy vehicles here, according the the company’s SEA president Martin Apfel.

Having used Thailand as a successful test bed for the programme, the initiative is set to make its way to Malaysia, with the company already working at identifying the appropriate outlets to act as the pilot for the programme.

“What the programme does is that it allows dealers to take in used cars, any brands but largely Chevrolet, and then to sell on the car after it has gone through our battery of checks. This in turn has helped to lift the resale value of the vehicles because it gives people the confidence that there will be a buyer for their car when they want to sell it and the dealer is interested in taking it in, because for him it’s good business and we’ve got the data for that,” Apfel said.

“We’ve used Thailand as the test-bed for something that’s called ‘Chevy Certified Used Car’, and we now have more than 30 outlets that operate that distinct line of business. We’re looking at expanding the business to 60 outlets by the end of the year,” he added.

In Malaysia, Apfel said that the plan is to have around 10 such outlets by the end of this year. “We know it works, but we need to pace it as it’s a special facility and therefore requires a bit of work, as we need to train the staff. You don’t want to be the used-car salesman from around the corner, as there is a specific service and a specific guarantee we give on the car that is sold out of the ‘Chevy Certified Used Car’ programme. That, in turn, will give customers more confidence in the resale value,” he explained.

The company is also planning to test a number of other initiatives for Chevrolet customers in Malaysia, in an effort to keep ownership costs predictable and low. One of these will concentrate on maintenance, where assistance will be extended to Naza Quest to help keep parts prices affordable.

“We have done extensive work in all the countries in ASEAN and also in competitive research to make sure we are competitively priced with the competition. The goal is to be on par with the market leader. We have a very competitive cost of ownership in Malaysia and though we haven’t done price benchmarking yet, based on a four-month observation, many fast moving items are competitively priced, which goes against the consumer perception that Chevrolet’s are expensive,” he said.

“People in ASEAN have a budget in mind when they start shopping and purchasing, so you’ve got to fit in there. If you’re unpredictable in the marketing funnel between awareness and consideration, you’re going to go very thin when it comes to purchase intention.”

Long live Corvette! GM pours $131m into Kentucky plant to support production of next generation car, due in 2013

The legendary Corvette name, around since the 50s, will live on after the current sixth-gen car expires. GM has announced that it will invest $131 million in the Bowling Green assembly plant to support production of the next generation Corvette.

The Kentucky plant is scheduled to continue building the current generation Corvette for at least the next two model years, including the 2012 car that begins this summer. Bowling Green is the exclusive manufacturer of all versions of the Corvette – Coupe, Convertible, Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1 – and has been the birth place of Corvette since 1981.

About 50,000 tourists visit the plant annually to catch a glimpse of the manufacturing process, some even watching their new cars being completed before taking delivery from the neighbouring National Corvette Museum. By the way, did you know that the Corvette is the “official state sports car of Kentucky”?

“This is a significant day for anyone who believes that America should build world-class, high-performance products. Corvette has no domestic peer for performance and pedigree and stands alongside the world’s best supercars with almost 60 years of continuous heritage,” said Mark Reuss, GM North America president.

Chevrolet Malibu revealed – global car for 100 markets

After a two pic tease last week, the Chevrolet Malibu has been fully unveiled online ahead of its Shanghai world debut. Like the Cruze, the Malibu is now a global car intended for nearly 100 markets on six continents. This is a first for Chevy, as the Malibu was previously a domestic Camry/Accord fighter, while some overseas markets got the dreary Epica to do the same job.

The new Malibu features a global lineup of four-cylinder engines that “complements its European-inspired driving characteristics”. Of the range, they’re focusing on the new Ecotec 2.5-litre direct injection unit. This DOHC engine features “enhanced authority” continuously variable valve timing, variable-displacement oil pump and electronic thermostat that save fuel.

Said to deliver “V6-like performance”, the Ecotec is estimated to have 190 hp and 245 Nm, which is quite a bit more than a Mazda6 with the same displacement.

The engine has noise-reducing features such as a cast exhaust manifold, steel crank, low-noise timing chain and direct mount accessories. It’s mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic with features designed to enhance efficiency. They include changes to clutch controls and hardware that improves shift response and time. These enabled engineers to specify higher gearing to improve cruising efficiency while maintaining performance and driveability.

With a “body structure as stiff as any” in the midsize market (as Americans call this size of cars), the Malibu sits on MacPherson strut front and mutli-link rear suspensions. The steering is of the EPS variety with “variable-effort” function.

Large, ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes, clamped on by dual-piston front and single-piston rear aluminum calipers, are expected to deliver segment-best stopping distance. Airbags will include side, knee, roof rail and second-row head/thorax ones.

In terms of appearance, there’s nothing really unexpected. The exterior features a prominent Chevy dual-port grille, projector HIDs and Camaro inspired LED dual-element taillamps. The smallest wheels are 17-inch items. Inside, the Malibu gets Chevy’s usual “dual cockpit” design and ice blue lighting, although the overall look doesn’t look very contemporary for a new car. The cabin is 113 litres larger than the previous model’s.

In the US, Malibu will come with Chevrolet’s new MyLink infotainment package at launch. It builds on the safety and security of OnStar and seamlessly integrates online services like Pandora internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio. There’s a six-inch deep storage area behind the seven-inch touch-screen that can flip open.

Selected US models also get electronically controlled integrated active aero shutters (lower air intakes are sealed when cooling isn’t needed) to improve aerodynamics (claimed to be segment best, Cd is near 0.28) and enhance fuel economy without sacrificing the exterior design.

New Chevrolet Malibu leaked ahead of Shanghai debut

This is an image of the all new Chevrolet Malibu, which is said to have been mistakenly uploaded to GM’s media site. In the US, the Malibu is tasked with taking on midsize stalwarts Camry, Accord and Altima, but this new one, which will get its world debut in Shanghai, is meant to be a world car like the Chevy Cruze.

It will carry on the Malibu nameplate in the US, but in some countries such as Australia, this new model will wear the Holden badge and receive the baton from the Epica, an ungainly looking big saloon that’s way off the D-segment par. By the way, before Naza Quest took over the Chevy marque in Malaysia, GM did toy with the idea of introducing the Epica in Malaysia, but it’s no big loss that it didn’t materialise.

In contrast, the car that we see here looks sharp and contemporary, and should be an interesting alternative to the Japanese favourites, although the Malaysian D-segment is a very hostile battle ground, and a good product alone is not quite enough. Because if it was, we would be seeing more Ford Mondeos on the road. Cruze sales haven’t really taken off either, so we wonder if this would ever reach our shores.

What do you think?

Black Beast – Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition

Chevrolet is 100 years old this year, and its legendary model, the Corvette, will get a Centennial Edition to celebrate the milestone. This edition, which features a black colour scheme and unique design elements, will be available on all Corvette models including Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1 versions.

The CE comes exclusively in Carbon Flash Metallic with satin-black graphics and unique Centennial Satin Black wheels and red brake calipers. The wheels are of lightweight cast-spun aluminium and include a thin red outline on the Z06. A logo featuring the image of founder Louis Chevrolet appears on the B-pillars, wheel centre caps and steering wheel. The seat headrests also carry an embossed centennial logo.

There’s one other small detail. The regular crossed flags badge contains a small adaptation, with “100″ in place of the traditional fleur-de-lis symbol in the Centennial Edition.

The Z06 is powered by a 7.0 litre LS7 V8 with 505 hp and 637 Nm of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels via a manual gearbox, so this is a “real man’s car” we’re looking at. Magnetic Selective Ride Control, claimed to be the world’s fastest-reacting suspension, is included on the Corvette CE.

Chevrolet auctioned a Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in West Palm Beach, Florida, over the weekend, with proceeds benefiting the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer. It’s the 100th 2012 Corvette off the assembly line, with a vehicle identification number ending in “00100.”

LupiniPower Chevrolet SuperUte – bring it on, BMW M!

Seems the gag the BMW M boys pulled to mark April Fools’ day has some admirers, in the form of the people who do make such a performance ute. South African tuning company LupiniPower, the makers of the Chevrolet SuperUte, was delighted to learn of the idea of a BMW M3 Pickup, even if it was pretty much by and large a humourous take on things.

“As huge BMW M fans, we’d love to see an M3 Pickup as our SuperUte’s only real market rival,” Michele Lupini explained. “It is hugely gratifying to note that M has taken note of a need for such top-end pick-up vehicles, although we do also need to point out that SuperUte is certainly no joke – our development cycle is now close to being completed and we’ll soon be ready to deliver.”

What the company is set to deliver is the limited production run 6.0 litre supercharged V8 SuperUte, which develops 535 hp at 5,600 rpm and 799 Nm at 3,400 rpm. Equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, the vehicle is capable of doing the 0-100 kph dash in 4.8 seconds, getting to 160 kph in just 9.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 282 kph.

The LupiniPower SuperUte features race-specification front disc brakes and four-pot calipers, with subtle suspension tweaks improve on the standard Ute’s already impressive handling, road holding and dynamic ability without compromising ride and comfort.

The vehicle wears 20-inch alloy wheels, with staggered 245/35 front and 285/30 rear Bridgestone Potenza RE050 tyres. Optional kit includes a full Bilstein suspension and a limited-slip differential for the serious track day fan.

Chevrolet Cruze Special Edition: 300 units, from RM97,888

Naza Quest is making available this Chevrolet Cruze Special Edition, which is limited to 300 units. Based on the standard Cruze 1.8 LT, the Special Edition adds on meaner styling and bigger wheels, and is priced “from just RM97,888″, which is the basic selling price (excluding OTR costs and insurance) for the standard car. But since there’s a “from” in there, we’re guessing that the final price will be higher if one opts for the full package.

What you get is a custom bodykit that includes a more aggressive front bumper which emphasises the air intakes, side skirts and a rear bumper with a diffuser style element. There are two cutouts for exhaust pipes, but from the pic, we can see that only one side (left) has an actual tip. There’s also a bootlid spoiler, LED wing mirror repeaters and door visors.

The bigger wheels are a major difference. This SE has 18-inch wheels wrapped with Falken tyres that replaces the standard Cruze’s 16-inch items. While they look good, there’s bound to be some trade off in ride comfort and performance. Speaking of that, there are no changes to the 140 hp 1.8-litre Ecotec/6-speed auto drivetrain combo.

Inside, the Cruze SE comes with leather seats with red stitching and scuff plates that feature an illuminated Cruze logo. We weren’t supplied a cabin pic, so I guess that you’ll have to head to the showroom to see the interior. By the way, this Special Edition supposedly pays homage to the Cruze WTCC car, which won the Manufacturers’ title for Chevy and the Drivers’ title for Yvan Muller in 2010.

Bangkok Motor Show: Chevrolet Colorado Show Truck

You’ve already been shown the official pics of Chevrolet’s Colorado “Show Truck”, unveiled in Bangkok a few days ago at a GM function. Now here are some live shots of the one-tonne challenger that will go on sale in Thailand late this year.

Making a lot of its near 100 year old history of making trucks, Chevrolet even brought some of the past masters to Bangkok, which contrasted strongly with the Colorado. Described as a “stylized version of the new truck”, the show truck features an extended-cab body on a high-ride 4WD chassis. The production model rolling off Rayong won’t be wearing those 20-inch wheels and off-road tyres though, and the LED count could be less.

Power comes from a 2.8L turbodiesel engine, Chevy says, but there weren’t other details released. Will there be a smaller engine? If not, we’ll need to see how GM’s choice of + 0.3 litres over the 2.5L bar compares with Ford’s choice of – 0.3 litres for the Ranger. The Blue Oval has also set six-speeds (with manual shift) as the auto gearbox benchmark. Read all about the Ranger here.

Chevrolet Cruze 2.0 LTZ Diesel available in Thailand – could it come to Malaysia?

A 2.0 litre Chevrolet Cruze is available up north in our neighbor Thailand, and it’s an oil burner! The new Chevrolet Cruze 2.0 is powered by a 2.0 litre VCDI diesel commonrail engine with a variable geometry turbocharger.

There are actually two 2.0 litre diesel engines that have been put in the Cruze. The first was a 1,991cc engine that made about 150 horses and 320 Nm of torque, which is similar to the unit found in the Captiva. There is also a new second generation engine with a displacement of 1,998cc that makes 163 PS and 360 Nm of torque from just 2,000 rpm.

The 1,991cc engine is used in the Thailand Cruze diesel for now, as revealed by the Thai brochure, but both have appealing output numbers. I do know that the diesel engine is built in Thailand itself, at a new US$445 million diesel engine plant. Could a Cruze Diesel join the ranks of Chevrolet Malaysia’s offerings? I hope so!

It would certainly have its appeal to the Malaysian carbuyer wishing to explore the wonders of diesel power, where you get both mad torque and fuel economy at the same time, but are currently pretty much limited to just one car with an affordable price tag – the Focus TDCi.

Chevrolet Colorado show truck breaks cover

The wraps have come off the Chevrolet Colorado show truck, ahead of its global debut at the Bangkok International Auto Show. The concept previews the next-generation Colorado midsize pickup truck, which will go on sale in Thailand later this year.

The show truck features an extended-cab body atop a high-stance AWD chassis and rides on large, 20-inch wheels and off-road tires. Power comes from an efficient 2.8 litre turbodiesel engine, which produces a broad torque band for excellent cargo and towing capability.

The Colorado’s design conveys strength through bodywork that appears tightly wrapped over the chassis and a wide, confident stance. In the front, you get the familiar gold bowtie, and the dual-port grille is framed by large headlamps that flow into the front fenders, with an extractor vent on the hood bulking things further.

It’s finished in a shade called Pepperdust Metallic, and this is accented with polished aluminum details in the fascias as well as integrated side steps and black-masked projector-style headlamps with LED lighting elements. At the rear is a full-width LED-lit taillamp, and there’s also a body-colour hard tonneau cover on the bed.

The 20-inch aluminium wheels feature a “liquid metal” finish, with Stone Gray color wheel ports, and are wrapped with Cooper 285/50R ZEON LTZ tyres.

Inside, the cabin features a dual-cockpit instrument panel design, which flows into the doors, and ice-blue lighting and high-quality, “double-faced” leather-trimmed seats add more dash. Elsewhere, a brace of motorcycle-inspired, three-dimensional gauges stand out on the instrument panel.

Contrasting dark wood trim, accented with chrome and low-gloss and soft-touch materials, is used throughout for a premium feel. A number of storage compartments are located throughout the interior, including a covered center bin for concealment of valuable items and a large, dual glovebox.

Additional features include a dual-zone, digital climate control system and an infotainment system, with an ergonomically positioned 7-inch LCD display in the centre stack at the heart of things.
