F1: McLaren reveals its 2012 challenger – the MP4-27

McLaren has unveiled its 2012 Formula 1 car, the MP4-27, at the team’s Woking base. With two British world champs in Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, McLaren finished last season with six victories and second in the standings, behind champions Red Bull. The MP4-27′s brief is therefore simple – beat the bulls.

The 2012 car looks a lot like last year’s machine, but McLaren says that the MP4-27 chassis has been substantially revised, with all major systems updated or redesigned. No more U-shaped sidepods too, to comply with new regulations.

“We have set ourselves tough and ambitious targets, and we aim to deliver those by the first race and have a championship-winning car. This car is a complete rework from nose to tail, and there is very little that is carried over. A bit of the fuel system is the same, but almost everything else on the car has changed,” said Tim Goss, McLaren’s director of engineering.

“There were a few features we have pushed quite hard from the beginning of the project. I am proud of the whole team and the efforts so far, and from now we go to the next phase of the project which is really wringing the performance out of it. We have a good track record of that – we have big plans, upgrades for the front wing, rear wing, floor and bodywork are already planned,” Goss added.

Elaborating further, technical director Paddy Lowe said: “The regulations are trimming us into narrower and narrower boxes. We don’t see big radical changes from one year to the next year. This car looks very similar but underneath a great deal of changes have taken place.

“Every part has been assessed for weight and performance. If you add all that up, you get a car that is quicker. Teams are tasked to find that 1% to 2% performance improvement – but nevertheless there are obvious innovations.

“We have done a lot of work around the back end, and there is a lot more tidy packaging there, and we have had to do a lot of work on exhausts. That has given the aerodynamicists a great challenge, not only to find the downforce but also in creating the right balance. You need downforce but also you have to be able to use it in the right area.”

Are we looking at the machine to break Red Bull and Seb Vettel’s total domination?

McLaren Automotive announces expansion into Asia Pacific – regional hub to be based in Singapore

McLaren Automotive has announced that its Asia Pacific network will be managed out from Singapore via its wholly-owned subsidiary, McLaren Automotive Asia, which will feature an initial team of around 10 McLaren Automotive employees managing retailers in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.

The company also announced that the Asia Pacific regional retail network at launch will consist of five dedicated and experienced automotive retailers, these being McLaren Hong Kong (Sime Darby), McLaren Osaka (Hakko Group), McLaren Tokyo (MT International), McLaren Singapore (Wearnes Automotive) and McLaren Sydney (Trivett).

The initial five McLaren retailers aren’t due to open until towards the end of 2011, but already hold on average around 18 months of orders for the McLaren MP4-12C. The company added that future expansion into the region is anticipated, but will be conservative and strategic, though initial plans are now under consideration for expansion into China.

The first three directors of McLaren Automotive Asia are McLaren Group’s executive chairman Ron Dennis, Singaporean Peter Lim, and Greg Levine, who is McLaren Automotive’s sales and marketing director. In August, it was announced that Lim had invested a significant shareholding in McLaren Automotive, joining the executive board with immediate effect.

McLaren gets investment from Singaporean billionaire

This just in – McLaren Automotive has announced that Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim has made a “significant investment” in the UK sports car manufacturer. Mr Lim is the 8th richest man in Singapore according to Forbes Asia. He also operates a chain of Manchester United-themed restaurants and bars across Asia.

“Peter Lim’s track record in Asia as a highly respected business leader adds further quality to our board in this highly competitive business environment at an exciting time for the company,” said Ron Dennis, McLaren Automotive and McLaren Group executive chairman.

Wearnes Automotive is the official dealer for McLaren cars in Singapore. When the Wearnes appointment was announced in February this year, there were already rumours of Peter Lim looking to invest in McLaren, but everything was denied at that time.

Virgin partners McLaren, gets access to Woking’s facilities

Virgin Racing was one of the three new teams that joined F1 last season, but Richard Branson’s latest plaything has always been in the shadow of Lotus Racing and now Team Lotus. But there’s a shake up happening within, which has already seen technical director Nick Wirth leave. Now, Virgin has announced a technical partnership with front runners McLaren, which will give them access to Woking’s top notch facilities.

“Under the terms of this technical partnership, Marussia Virgin Racing will be able to access McLaren’s wind tunnel, simulator, rigs, and fitness and well being programmes. These properties are state-of-the-art, and we confidently therefore expect Marussia Virgin Racing to derive significant benefits from them,” revealed McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh.

“When we undertook our detailed review of the team in the first half of 2011, it was clear that our bold ambitions for the future would need to be matched with some equally bold steps towards achieving them. Our technical partnership with McLaren is very exciting indeed. McLaren is one of the most prestigious and successful marques in grand prix racing history, with an enviable record of success over many years,” said Andy Webb, CEO of Virgin Racing.

“We can benefit enormously from McLaren’s far-reaching techniques and capabilities and I have no doubt that this partnership will see us take the technical steps necessary to make a significant leap forwards,” he added.

All this comes after Virgin hired Pat Symonds as consultant since the start of this season. The former Renault man was implicated in the 2009 Crashgate scandal, and is serving a ban till 2013 that doesn’t allow him to take an official position. He will continue working for Virgin.

Idol creator Simon Fuller to manage Lewis Hamilton

After ending his dad Anthony’s job as his manager last year, McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton will now be managed by Simon Fuller’s famous XIX Management. Fuller, not to be confused with the departed American Idol judge, is the creator and producer of the Idol franchise, which includes the popular American Idol. In XIX Management, Hamilton will join top British sportsmen like Andy Murray and David Beckham.

“It was important I took my time to make this decision as it had to be right for my career and my long-term future. I spoke to many interested companies in recent months but I felt Simon Fuller along with his team at XIX Entertainment not only wanted to help me become an even better racing driver, but they also shared my ambitions for the longer term. I look forward to working with them closely,” the ex-F1 champ said.

The entertainment mogul said: “I’ve met Lewis and his father several times in the past and kept an eye on his career closely over the years. Like any British fan I watched with pride and admiration at his achievements, incredibly winning the world championship at such a young age.

“He’s not only one of the leading sportsmen of his generation, he will I believe become one of the best of all time. It’s an honour to be partnering with Lewis in what will be a very exciting stage of his career.”

McLaren MP4-26 unveiled – now with KERS and more

There are only few Formula 1 teams that have not launched their 2011 challengers including HRT and Virgin. That number has reduced with the launch of McLaren’s MP4-26 in Berlin yesterday. In terms of livery, it would be difficult to notice any changes compared to the 2010 car. It looks very much the same albeit some changes on the vehicle design.

The most notable change is the unique U-shaped sidepod. The Woking-based team claims that the radical sidepod design feeds more air efficiently to the MP4-26′s rear end, thus increasing downforce. The team says that this makes up for the absence of the double diffuser system following a ban imposed for this season.

“We want to get the rear-end working as well as possible following the loss of performance caused by the banning of the double-diffuser. Once again, we’ve really pushed the car’s cooling configuration: we’ve got a second air intake on the engine cover for gearbox and hydraulic cooling,” said McLaren Engineering Director Tim Goss.

Other features include a long wheelbase, a modified airbox and nose, a central-mounted rear exhaust system as well as other aerodynamic features that comply with the new set of rules. Just like its rivals, McLaren has also opted for KERS which was last seen in 2009 and an active rear wing, which is a moveable rear wing that can be manually operated from the steering wheel. There are also the Pirelli tires.

The team will perform a shakedown during a private test session at the Idiada Ground in Spain on 8th February. This will be followed by further testing along with other teams in Jerez which begins on 10th February. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will race the MP4-26 this year. McLaren to buy back 40% share from Daimler AG

It has been reported recently in The Independent that owners of the successful McLaren F1 team, McLaren Group have taken out a loan in the amount of £40m from HSBC for a number of projects.

One of them is the buyback of Daimler AG’s 40 percent stake in the McLaren Group (which includes the F1 team) – the money will “provide head room on its facilities to assist in the buyback of the remaining Daimler shares by the end of 2011″.

The Formula 1 team is McLaren Group’s biggest income provider, bringing in 64 percent of its £264.9m turnover in 2008. On track, Lewis and the team may be ahead of its automotive competitors Ferrari, sadly the same can’t be said about its road cars. Ferrari made almost €1.9bn in 2008 selling 6,587 cars, whereas McLaren were trailing with £91.4m in the same year.

Thus the reason for the loan, which the majority of will be used for the development of its factory in Woking in preparation of the McLaren MP4-12C super car. Priced at around £175,000 and utilizing Formula 1 carbon fibre technology, the automotive arm of the company plans to produce 1000 units in its first year.

Along with the MP4-12C, the company also plan to diversify its model range with the introduction of a high end seriesof production cars, which will help them achieve their 4000 vehicles a year target by the middle of the decade. This will involve big risks as the loan has been secured on the basis of McLaren’s intellectual property, cash in the bank and its property which is said to have a value of £193.8m.

McLaren Automotive is now offering a 48 percent stake in the business to private investors while the remainder is split between the Bahraini Mumtalakat sovereign wealth fund, executive chairman Ron Dennis and the Swiss TAG Group. The three also jointly own the McLaren Group.

Chief engineer Pat Fry leaves McLaren after 17 years

Pat Fry, chief engineer at McLaren, has left the Woking based F1 team after 17 years. He was the lead designer of last year’s MP4-24 race car and is in charge of the 2011 MP4-26 challenger. According to team principal Martin Whitmarsh Fry will be replaced by someone “younger” and “hungrier”.

Fry started his career with Benetton in 1987 and worked as a race engineer and test team engineer till 1992 before a move to McLaren in 1993. At Mclaren, he moved to engineering in 1995 and was instated as the chief engineer alongside Tim Goss in 2002. Both alternate as lead designers – Goss is in charge of this year’s car, which has powered championship leader Jenson Button to two race wins so far this season.

“I think it was probably good for him, the right decision for him to take a bit of a break, take a breather. I think he’s worked very hard for the team for a number of years. Within our team, then, I think we’ve got quite a bit of a talent and depth, so in these situations it’s a great opportunity for someone younger, maybe hungrier, to come along and replace all of us,” Whitmarsh was quoted as saying.
