Jenson Button clinched his first victory of the season at yesterday’s Australian Grand Prix, lifting him up to third position in the Driver’s Championship. The Brit who scored his first world title last year with Brawn now has 31 points, behind the Ferrari duo of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, with 37 and 33 points respectively. A couple of points down the road is Button’s teammate Lewis Hamilton in fourth place with 23.

Hamilton finished the race in sixth place although he believes that he could have crossed the line in second making it a 1-2 for McLaren. The 2008 World Champion was frustrated as his team ordered him to make a second pitstop for a new set of tires, which to him was unnecessary.

Pole sitter Sebastian Vettel who was leading the race had to settle with retirement due to brake failure. Apparently his car’s brake disc was damaged as a result of a left-front wheel that was not fitted properly during a pitstop. In the season-opening race in Bahrain, the German was also denied victory due to a mechanical problem.

An official report revealed that it was a faulty spark plug although some are saying that his Red Bull racer was running on a conservative mode due to lack of fuel. Anyway Formula 1 now returns to Sepang this week for the third round. Last year the race was red-flagged mid-way due to heavy rain. Lets hope it does not happen again this year!
