Sepang to host F1 till 2018, 3-year contract extension

2015 malaysian gp podium

There will be F1 in Malaysia till 2018. Sepang International Circuit (SIC) announced yesterday that the contract to host the Formula 1 Malaysia Grand Prix has been extended for another three years until 2018, following successful negotiations between SIC and Formula One Management.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak revealed the news after the conclusion of the 2015 F1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix at SIC yesterday. It was also confirmed that national oil company Petronas will continue to be the title sponsor of the event till 2018. Petronas has been supporting the Malaysian GP since it was first held here in 1999.

“Other agencies and ministries including Tourism Malaysia must work together to make this an important event in the tourism calendar. We need to create more excitement and buzz to lure more spectators,” Najib urged.

The 17th edition of the Malaysian GP was won by Sebastian Vettel, winning a race in only his second race for Ferrari after jumping from Red Bull. The two-stopping German beat Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to the finish line. Both Silver Arrows pitted three times but didn’t have the speed and tyre life to catch the SF15-T. Vettel’s unexpected victory is the Scuderia’s first since the 2013 Spanish GP. Looks like they’ve found their new Schumacher…

There have been numerous suggestions to renovate the circuit and landscapes to further provide comfort for spectators,

I think electric bus shuttles between existing nearby carparks and shopping malls like klia2 during race week and also having the race right before /after singapore gp will greatly boost tourism

We can host the concerts and such on the weekend between the two races, a month of f1 craze in malaysia and singapore (4 weekends madness)

How much does it cost to host a race and how much did the Malaysian government pay? With the expense of the tax payer’s money, we would like to know the agreements. Many countries decided not to host a Formula One race because of the high hosting fees and I don’t trust Bernie. Germany, South Korea, Turkey has since do not host a race. Does cost goes over benefit? Please look into it.

The money is paid for mostly by petronas.

With the petronas mercedes team currently one of the top teams in f1, it would be silly if the petronas mercedes team can’t race in malaysia.

I’m glad that they decided to extend this but I hope that they can improve some of the infrastructure at the area.

Here are a couple of radical ideas from the mind of yours truly:

    # Night race – Aside from pulling in the Euro TV watching crowd, night races just add a little more excitement to the whole affair.

    # SIC station for ERL – Would be great if they can attach a junction to the ERL service to have a station in SIC that can be activated during major motor racing events. It would make it *SO* much easier to get to SIC.

    # Ticket pricing – The main grandstand has *A LOT* of empty seats on raceday, perhaps consider adjusting the ticket prices to fill up the place. Maybe follow in AirAsia’s lead by making ticket prices continuously variable.

    # Events – They are catching on to the idea of combining the F1 ticket with concerts etc. Need to ramp this up even more.

    # Collaboration – Work with companies like AirAsia, MAS, Genting, Sunway etc to create combination tickets that gets you preferential rates for Flight + Race + Theme Parks.

Now lets hope SIC gets your proposals.

Agree the most with #1 and #4.
