VIDEOS: The Peugeot 308 GTi – growling on tarmac

This hot hatch is looking really good from the sound of it. After many leaks, followed by the official revealing last month, Peugeot has made public a series of video that showcases the 2016 Peugeot 308 GTi making good use of a set of country roads.

Developed by Peugeot Sport – the company’s racing division – the one we see here comes with the distinctive “Coupe Franche” two-tone colour scheme that’s thankfully, optional. Powered by the Prince 1.6 litre turbocharged engine, what you’re seeing in all videos here is the beefier 270 hp variant – the base model gets 250 hp.

The growl that you hear from the exhaust system with double rounded tips sounds pretty aggressive. We sure hope that that’s purely exhaust noise and not enhanced speaker notes, though. Either way, it still sounds pretty amazing when compared to the far quieter 208 GTi.

So folks, this, the Volkswagen Golf R or the Renault Megane RS 265 Cup?

amazing how much power can come out of these small engines nowadays. 270hp from 1.6L engine is about the same power as the Renault Megane RS265 with 2.0L

It is not that amazing actually, when it’s all about the boost. The crux of the matter would be reliability.

  • I’ve yet to see how it performs so for now my fav hot hatch is still the Megane RS. But I think sounds way better than the Megane & Golf R. And to think that it’s coming from a tiny 1.6L engine is just mind blowing

    Sure does sound pretty good.

One thing though, I did notice in terms of the materials used, the 308 doesn’t feel as premium in real life compared to the Golf. Like, there is a lot of hard plastic, and the interior does feel smaller than the Golf too.

If only the sorted the DSG issues…

  • the 270hp is about 3000 pounds cheaper than the base model Golf R. So there’s hope that it’ll be around RM230k-260k assuming Naza doesn’t f the prices

    • 308 GTI is not coming into malaysia due to fuel restriction, the 308 require RON98 to run smoothly

Not bad 270hp from the old Prince engine..I mean BMW has already abandon that engine and is using its new 1.5l turbo engine.

But to put it against the Megane….hmm its tall order.

When the title “The Peugeot 308 GTi – it’s coming for us” I thought it is going to come to Malaysia. It will be nice if it’s going to be available here. If they bring in 308 gt too is also good with manual transmission some more. Golf R is only available in dual clutch transmission here, while megane rs is not family friendly type of car like only have 2 real doors.
