2017 Citroen C4 sketches heralds China market sedan

The next-generation C4 hatch seems to be coming along nicely. These are new teaser sketches that give a tantalising peek of what could be the new ‘C-Quatre’ C4 sedan for China, which will replace the market’s C4 L model next year.

It is speculated that the new model’s front-end styling will be shared with the next C4 hatch, which is expected to debut in Europe towards the end of 2016. This represents a certain sense of continuity in terms of the French carmaker’s strategy to offer a C4 hatch in Western markets and a sedan version with an almost identical front-end design for the Chinese market.

Citroen is now positioning the new C4 with its evolutionary styling direction as a more budget-friendly volume-selling option as opposed to the DS, which is the future of luxury for the brand.

Word is that both the new C4 might use the same ‘Common Module Platform’ that PSA Peugeot Citroen is developing with its partner Dongfeng Motor Corporation. Meanwhile, PSA’s larger EMP2 platform, which is the base for the new Peugeot 308 and Citroen C4 Picasso, will be used for the C5 instead.

Both companies confirmed back in April that the US$280 million Common Module Platform architecture will focus on light and small cars across the Peugeot, Citroen, DS and Dongfeng brands.

This is sad. While the sketch doesn’t look too bad, it still has to be toned down for the production version, and at that point… Besides, replace the badges with VW badges and no one would say “that’s not a VW…”. This thing looks much more like a VW than a Citroen.

Also, what’s with the platform? The C5 needs a bigger platform that is much more comfort oriented, EMP2 would be perfect for the C4. Also look at the competitors in the C4’s segment. We’ve got the Ford Focus, Opel Astra, Peugeot 308 and VW Golf, plus the also pretty good Kia cee’d, and the surely also going to be a very fine Renault Megane. They are all sophisticated, well equipped cars. There is also the Skoda Octavia, which is basically a Golf massively stretched out, reduced options in terms of gadgets and with slightly cheaper materials in the interior (Skoda), at the same price as the Golf. And the Seat Leon, which is basically a Golf made prettier and sportier, with slightly cheaper materials in the cockpit, sold at a lower price. Build quality is great with all of them, and they are running on sophisticated platforms.

So… then comes Citroen, with an absolute budget platform developed with a Chinese company, and wants to compete in THIS market? For people who want C segment space, but a lower price, there’s the C4 Cactus. Do we really need a C4 that isn’t really competitive? What is it supposed to go against? The Dacia Logan? That would be very sad, and I would be surprised if they can get the price THAT low. If it isn’t, who would buy the C4 over the Seat Leon? Or, if they want more comfort, the next Renault Megane?

Btw., didn’t Citroen say the innovations from the Cactus should also go into the other C models?

Seems now Peugeot Citroen have something of a VW Golf/Passat fetish going on…

Just look at their new Peugeot 308
