Looking for a retro-looking, electric-powered, hand-built, three-wheeled vehicle? Good news because the Morgan Motor Company has revealed the production version of the Morgan EV3 at the Geneva Motor Show.
The first all-electric model from the British automaker features the same configuration as the 3 Wheeler, except the prominent 2.0 litre V twin engine has been ditched in favour of a liquid-cooled 46 kW electric motor driving the sole rear wheel.
From a standstill, the EV3 takes less than nine seconds to get to 100 km/h, and will continue onwards to a top speed of 145 km/h. A 20 KWh lithium battery pack positioned within the tricycle’s tubular space frame chassis provides power to the electric motor.
With the adoption of an electric powertrain, the EV3’s front-end gets a redesign in the absence of the internal combustion engine. Looking less busy and sleeker than the 3 Wheeler, there is now a tri-bar headlight setup, with brass conductive cooling fins encasing the batteries.
From that point onwards, everything remains largely unchanged, inspired by the 1930’s aero-engine race cars, classic motorcycles and 1950’s fantasy automatons.
The modern element here is the usage of carbon composite materials for the car’s body such as the bonnet and side pods, making it 25 kg lighter than the 3 Wheeler at 500 kg. Aluminium panels are used elsewhere, all hand-worked over an ash wood frame.
The Morgan EV3 will go into production in the fourth quarter of 2016, and will be priced comparably to the petrol-powered 3 Wheeler. Keep in mind that outright performance isn’t the be-all and end-all when it comes to Morgan’s three-wheeled creations.
According to Morgan’s managing director Steve Morris, “the EV3 is an exciting opportunity for our customers to enjoy the unique Morgan driving experience.” That’s the goal here, a unique driving experience. Interested?

This is a Steampunk-styled vehicle. Nice.
I would think that it will look better with 4 wheels. Really like the retro and like you said steampunk feel to it. Just don’t think we’ll ever see one on our roads here.
