The new 2016 Toyota Hilux should be just around the corner now. Following the reveal of the pick-up truck’s estimated pricelist last month and the local brochure earlier this week, we’ve now spotted ads of the new Hilux on Facebook, posted by one Encik Cairo, who is most likely a Toyota salesperson.
The five pics posted by the SA show a black double-cab Hilux with taped up emblems, but they aren’t fooling anyone. From the pictured truck’s alloys, foglamps, chrome wing mirrors and lack of projector headlamps, we know that this is the 2.4G 4×4 automatic, which should be the best-selling variant as it hits the sweet spot in equipment and price, estimated at RM125,000.
That buys you a Hilux with a chrome grille, power-folding chrome door mirrors, front foglamps, 17-inch alloys, multi-info display, keyless entry and start, leather multifunction steering wheel, DVD infotainment system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth, reverse camera, an eight-way powered driver’s seat, leather seats, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Active Traction Control (A-TRC), Hill-Start Assist and solar and security tint.
There’s also a 2.4G 4×4 manual, which, apart from the gearbox, lacks the auto’s VSC, A-TRC, HAC, powered driver’s seat, leather seats and window tint. Estimated price RM115,000.
The double-cab variants below the 2.4G are the RM95,000 2.4 4×2 manual and very basic spec RM105,000 2.4 Standard 4×4 manual, which have black wing mirrors and steel wheels.
Above the 2.4G is the 2.8G 4×4 automatic, which raises eyebrows in both spec and price. The range topper has an estimated price of RM135,000, but will come with automatic LED projector headlights with LED DRLs, 18-inch wheels, an Optitron instrument cluster, a Camry-style 4.2-inch colour LCD multi-info display and seven airbags.
As for the oily bits, the new Hilux will launch with Toyota’s new GD turbodiesel engine in 2.4 and 2.8 litre sizes, with six-speed transmissions. The bigger VNT engine boasts 177 hp at 3,400 rpm and 450 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. The 2.4L has 150 hp at 3,400 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,000 rpm (Thai figures, with six-speed auto).
To recap, the new Hilux will be available in six variants – 2.4 MT 4×4 (the sole single-cab choice), 2.4 MT 4×2, 2.4 Standard MT 4×4, 2.4G MT 4×4, 2.4G AT 4×4 and 2.8G AT 4×4, with estimated Peninsular Malaysia pricing of RM93,000, RM95,000, RM105,000, RM115,000, RM125,000 and RM135,000 respectively. The comments primarily discuss the 2016 Toyota Hilux's features, design, safety, and market position. Many users express disappointment over the limited safety features such as the absence of VSC and airbags in lower variants, criticizing UMW for overpricing and lacking similarity to overseas models. Comparisons are made with rival pickups like Ford Ranger, D-Max, and Mitsubishi Triton, often favoring the Ranger's modern design and better safety equipment. There is mention of the Hilux’s outdated tech and styling, with some viewers noting that trucks are viewed as a "third world" mentality in Malaysia, while others appreciate the brand’s durability. Overall, sentiments lean towards frustration with the Hilux’s value for money, safety features, and design, with some support for Ford Ranger as a superior alternative.
