Mitsubishi Triton updated in Thailand – full-time Super Select 4WD II from Pajero Sport, seven airbags

The Mitsubishi Triton may have only been launched here last year, but in Thailand the pick-up truck has already received a few upgrades to keep up with the increasing competition.

No changes to appearance, but trim levels have been rejigged with added equipment, including tilt and telescopic steering wheel adjustment on all models, as well as a second 12 V socket on all Mega Cab (king cab) and Double Cab variants.

The biggest change is that a high-end GLS LTD variant, previously available only one the Double Cab 4×4, has been introduced on the Mega Cab and Double Cab Plus 4×2 models, replacing the previous GLS. All GLS LTD now get the four-spoke multifunction steering wheel from the new Pajero Sport.

In addition, the top-of-the-range Double Cab 4×4 GLS LTD 5AT also ditches the current Easy Select 4WD system for the Pajero Sport’s Super Select 4WD II. The system adds a new 4H full-time all-wheel drive mode, with a viscous coupling centre differential that shuffles power between the front and rear wheels. The 4HLc and 4LLc modes lock the differential, mimicking the previous 4H and 4L modes, while the 2H two-wheel drive mode has been retained for better fuel consumption.

Also added to the top-spec model are side and curtain airbags, making it seven airbags in total – it was previously only available as an option. Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC) is fitted on this variant as standard, as before.

No word yet on whether Malaysian-market models will see similar upgrades, but with stiffer competition from the new Nissan NP300 Navara and facelifted Ford Ranger, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it on our shores soon.

nothing wrong with paddle shifters on a truck… the purpose of paddle shifters are for ease when shifting gears… your concept on paddle shifters for racing is totally idiotic… btw, UMW offers for the upcoming Hilux sucks as well… manually controlled air con for a RM125,000 piece of junk?

    • The diesel in Malaysia is not clean…. So why bother with new engine? Unless MMM has too much money and time for warranty claims?

With all the paddle shifters, keyless entry and so much good equipment, the current Malaysian triton still not include vehicle stability control or more airbags. Safety is most important.

  • Who cares about the steering wheel; will a rear diff lock be available? Central diff locking is obvious on any 4×4 but can it compete wit the Ranger and Hilux with a simple rear diff lock?

If not even as an option then it drops off my short list.
